Expanding Self-Advocacy Program for Maximum Reach

By Pamela Azaria | International Resources Associate

Dear Donor,

Thank you for your support of Chimes Israel’s Self-Advocacy and Empowerment Program for Girls and Women with Disabilities. The goal of the program is to create a change in the participants’ knowledge, ability and attitude toward a better understanding of themselves, relationships and sexuality, and the ability to protect themselves and/or seek help against harmful, abusive, violent or exploitative relationships.

We recently completed a session in Rishon LeZion, Israel, where results indicated an 84% increase in the participants’ sense empowerment and personal relationship independence in at least three of the questionnaire statements. A majority, 58%, exhibited an assimilation of the workshop concepts. A high number, 84%, also expressed more positive attitudes about themselves than before the workshop.

We also recently launched the program in Arabic in the Arab-Israeli city of Taibe. The main challenge there was to adapt content to Arab culture. To respect certain culturally "taboo" subjects such as male anatomy and intimate relationships, we adapted the curriculum to spend more time on women's assertiveness and empowerment, female friendship, and women's circles as support and assistance. In addition, it was necessary to translate all the questionnaires (knowledge, attitudes and competence) into Arabic.

As part of the larger project goal to integrate the workshop’s concepts into our organization’s DNA, we are adapting this workshop to reach men as well as women. In 2024, we will launch a 12-week program with a mixed group of women and men. The intention is for women and men to understand each other as humans. For this, we are rebuilding the syllabus, adapting content, and carefully choosing the location and pilot group.

In addition, we are expanding the concept further to deliver mandatory trauma awareness training across our organization. We believe that the way to create a mindful and safe environment is to formulate and execute an organizational policy and program that is tuned-in to exploitation and trauma. The goal is to create organization-wide professional discourse on the subject; stimulate our staff to identify and intervene with sensitivity; and provide preventative tools for the beneficiaries and their families themselves. The program will be included in the organization's quality policy, communicating an organization-wide focus on providing services with a sensitivity toward beneficiary exploitation and trauma.

We also aim to be Israel’s pioneer in the area. We will work with the Argaman Institute to create an Israel Standards Institute, “Quality Standards Mark,” in the area. Organizations will be able to achieve the mark by demonstrating its focus on service recipient physical and mental safety; awareness of exploitation and trauma; and encouragement of freedom to improve abilities and quality of life while eradicating these ills. This integration of the concepts within all organizational populations will become essential to obtaining the quality standard mark.

Thank you so much for making all of this possible!
