Summary

Self-Help has been working to alleviate hunger in Nicaragua since 1999. We provide opportunities for women to learn business operations, and loans ($50-$200) to initiate these enterprises is proving to be successful in this mission. Training and loans for new groups of women, and value-added enterprises further strengthen women's income and voices in society. Funding is needed to support the objective to help 200 women in Nicaragua. Self-Help is also proud of its 97% return on business loans.

Challenge

Many rural women in southern Nicaragua face limited education thereby decreasing their voices in the home and community. Despite playing important roles working beside their husbands in the fields, while managing the house and caring for children, financial decisions tend to remain in the hands of the male. Training and loans to start businesses strengthen women's roles and positions in society. We seek funding to extend that combination of education & microloans to 200 women in rural Nicaragua.

Solution

Women reinvest 90% of profits into the family to feed, clothe, and educate their children. By offering even illiterate women the opportunity to learn basic business skills and the financing to put their skills into action, we have witnessed their abilities to start up small businesses, increase family income, and achieve self-sufficiency. This project will extend that opportunity to 200 women living in southern Nicaragua, improving overall quality of life for the entire family.

Long-Term Impact

This project is about more than economic development: it's about advancing human dignity. Mothers take pride in sending their children to bed well-fed, in a decent home each night, and then off to school clothed in proper school uniforms each morning. We teach women about personal and family health so one illness doesn't bankrupt them anymore, and help them open savings accounts at commercial banks so they can join the formal economy. But most of all, we build self-esteem and create leaders.
