Thanks to YOU our middle school students have had a great year connecting with nature! We are only $898 short of fully funding this project and we need YOUR help!
May 7th is Bonus Day at Global Giving and any donation made at 9:00am EDT (while funds last) will be matched 30% by Global Giving. That means a donation will go so much further in helping to reach our goal!
Please reach out to your friends and family and ask them to support Adrian and his fellow students so we can complete our Earth Connectors project this week! Don't forget that Mother's Day is coming up this weekend and Father's Day is next month so this would be a great time to get that unique gift you were looking for! Just check that the gift is a tribute gift and Global Giving will send the recipient a card!
Now to the real update you were looking for and a thank you from Josie and her fellow students!
Our last few days at Githens have been filled with discovering everything that is coming out with the spring weather. The group of students we had this session have been fun, energetic, enthusiastic and eager to learn. They had lots of energy but when they discovered an animal, they became super gentle and would safely follow that animal to study its habits, movements, details.
Activities included bird identification, nest watching, discussing the citizen science project of Nest Watch that Cornell University runs, fire making and cooking on it, and snake hunts. Many of the edible plants, like green brier, dandelion, violets, and pine needles have been tasted. Josie said she was going to take the green brier leaves she collected and experiment cooking with them. Adrian said, " I am going to figure out some recipes with these wild edibles and add them to the cookbook I am writing!" We followed five-lined skinks, a garter snake, and a rat snake. We found a Carolina wren and cardinal nest, learned what time of day to visit them, and checked on the progress of the eggs. The cardinals hatched! We learned that wrens will often make two nests, one of which is on the ground that they use as a distraction from the true nest. We found one of the ground nests as well. The favorite part of our day was just going out in the woods and exploring.
The staff from the Githens afterschool program was so supportive of us. Jamar Harris, Encore! Site Manager at the school wrote the following to us:
"The services you provided here at Githens Middle School have been nothing less than extraordinary; our students and staff are truly grateful for all you have done. Not only did you provide scholarships for our students in need but Adam, Mary and Karen all were very patient and kind at all times. In this age of technology it is rare that you find avenues to teach the children of today about the joys and wonders in our great outdoors. Somehow you all have found a way to captivate the spirit of our youth to give a hunger to learn about nature and its many layers as well as themselves.
As a first hand witness I do believe that Piedmont Wildlife is a program that has the ability to effect youth of all races and creeds. We must support programs of this nature in any shape or form, especially Piedmont Wildlife. It provides students with hope for the world while growing to understand their surrounding from a new perspective. Thank You once again for all the hard work and dedication you have shown to us at Githens Middle School. It hasn’t gone unnoticed and is greatly respected."
The students tell you what their favorite part of this session was and send a big thank you that can be viewed by clicking on the attached links.
