CW Graduates receive the help they need

CW Graduates receive the help they need

Our CW graduates asked for help and CW is delivering!

The Chicuchas Wasi (CW) School's 37 alumnae are serious about their education at the public high school they now attend, but their home life has only gotten worse as they have gotten older. In the last CW Update I had to relay the tragic death of one of our CW alumnae girls who, without a mother to love and support her, felt she could not continue and ended her life at 15years of age. The two month long teacher strike in Peru's public schools left our girls without classes and heavy pressure from families, or in Xiomara's case her guardian, to go to work and forget school.

The shock of this terrible loss has deeply shaken the CW staff, administration, current students and alumnae as well as all of CW here in California. The strike is over now and the girls are back in school, with the additional pressure by the Peruvian Ministry of Education that all students must make up the lost school time adding weekend classes. Our teenage CW high school girls all work in addition to attending school and keeping up with their classes, so their lives are overwhelming.

The CW psychologist began immediate emergency intervention and continues with regular meetings during this time of crisis as more of the girls have revealed they have also thought about ending their lives. Xiomara brought to our attention the deeper issues facing our teenagers and that CW must create a formal in depth program to identify how we can help them. Meetings with their beloved and trusted CW director Ruth has allowed the girls to voice the fears and pressures that they can't handle alone anymore. They said they feel alone, missing the loving support and affection from their CW teachers especially now when they need it most as teens, they have no one to guide them or listen to their adolescent problems. They asked for help and CW listened and responded.

"We need a Psychologist's help, and to know that we are still part of CW emotionally. When we were students here in CW school we knew we could trust you, that you listened to us and protected us and you gave us the strength we needed - now we feel alone." - Alumnae girls

A formal "Program Xiomara" has been created to support our girls in high school.

                      ************************************************

 Program Xiomara

Objective: Support each alumni with the necessary tools to thrive in their emotional, academic, economic and family realities.

Scope: We expect to reach all 37 alumnae girls from the 4 CW school graduations and begin monitoring those who will graduate this year.

History: Why this Program?

In 2013, CW graduated our first 6th grade class of 9 girls to public high school. Committed to a brighter future for our girls, CW sought ways to guarantee that they could complete high school. The socioeconomic situation was that 70% of these girls came from single mother homes, 20% had absentee fathers, and 10% were in problem homes like Xiomara. In Xiomara’s case, her mother, a mentally ill woman, lived on the streets of Abancay. She gave her daughter to a woman who mistreated her, who in turn tired of the girl and gave her to another woman who then moved to Cusco. This woman knew that CW school provided free education and brought her to us. In all the years that Xiomara was with us we have fought this lady to give Xiomara a dignified treatment, but she considered Xiomara a free domestic servant. Xiomara did not have the birth certificate needed to go to school, which CW obtained by traveling to Abancay. Xiomara became the CW valedictorian in 2013.

To guarantee the continuing education of our girls, we approach the best private high schools in Cusco to obtain scholarships for them. Raimandi, a prestigious private school in Cusco offered Xiomara a scholarship if she got the highest score on the entry test. Xiomara was awarded this scholarship. With great excitement after graduation we went to tell her guardian of Xiomara’s achievement. The guardian responded she had already done so much for Xiomara, it was now Xiomara’s turn to pay her back by taking care of the lady’s daughter. She would study in the public school next to her house! Since then she forbid Xiomara any contact with CW, or to attend the CW alumnae meetings, we only happened to meet up with Xiomara on the street.

Since 2013 our funds were limited to the CW school students. However, thanks to special friends who informally donated the financial support for high school enrollment costs every February and March, our students could obtain either uniforms and/or school supplies. Since our last graduation a kind woman who took over the studies of one of our girls about to miss the school year. Thanks to her support the student is still studying.

Budget for the project.

To identify clearly how CW could best help we talked directly with the girls and asked them what their most urgent needs were. Their response was an overwhelming need in these areas:

• Emotional, and Psychological Support
• Tutorial and academic support
• Economical support.

Creating a Budget for this new program

The results of planning with the CW Psychologist
*A social worker who would be in permanent contact and see closely the reality and needs of the girls was urgent.

*Begin with Psychological support in group as well as individual therapies.

In the first therapy session it was revealed that our girls must learn fast and practical trades, such as cake baking, making chocolate, etc. in order to support their mothers in some way. The psychologist also found out that more than one girl had thought of committing suicide.

Budget costs:

Salary of a social worker         per month                  1,000.00 soles

Cost of Psychologist               Group therapy                80.00 soles
