Back to school 4 months joyfully with some concern

After 4 months back in the classroom, we have new concerns    -Rae Lewis July 1, 2022

CW school 2022 began last March. Our teachers and admin didn't know what to expect of students after 2 years isolated at home. Questions like: During national lock-down how did families manage crammed into small quarters? Did they have enough to eat every day? Did too much stress, hunger and no work create abuse and other dysfunction? We now know that some of those concerns were real and we are working to improve what we can. Teachers and Ruth are available to the girls to listen to their stories with generous hugs.

Serious study is a daily main focus.
Today our girls are focused on multiplication tables and a human science lectures on how the human body works, delivered by their teachers and recess to socialize with classmates.

Malnutrition is a frequent consequence of poverty
CW staff is paying attention. Ruth reports that our girls are thinner and arrive hungry ready for the morning oatmeal to wake them up. We still cannot restart our daily dining in-cafeteria meals for the girls, even in shifts, due to crowding and covid worries. However, for 3 months we have been preparing in our kitchen the midday meal and delivered to each classroom, for each girl in individual Tupperware-like containers to their desks, separated several feet from each other. We provide a nutritional hot meal like 'Loco de Zapallo' a rich creamy squash stew (cubes of yellow squash, cheese, potatoes, corn), and lacking in most of our homes due to poverty. Lunchtime is eagerly received and our 5 year olds quickly finish and are first to line in the kitchen for more of the popular and tasty creamy squash dish, telling the cooks how good it is. But they are still hungry. The high cost of food lately has put an added burden on the family to provide home meals and Ruth fears that too many girls only receive the main meal at school. Some Peruvian dishes we prepare for the girls: Chicken stew, Lentils, Tarwi (a creamy legume dish) to name a few.

Cusco celebrates every opportunity for happiness and laughter

June 24th is the annual Day of Cusco, celebrated all over Cusco and in schools. CW Girls put on their traditional dress and dance on our patio to Celebrate their culture.

The team built a typical high Andean outdoor oven called a "Huatia" (mud-earth packed clumps to build a traditional outdoor oven) Our school's home-grown potatoes were poured into the top of this oven when it was hot enough and then the entire oven smashed down to let them cook for about 40 min. A bit like the 'Hawaiian Imu', but on top of ground. The girls then pealed away the skins and smeared each potato with a tasty salsa and popped them into their mouths - an extra picnic treat before the end of the day.

The CW team is constantly talking about how happy they are to be back in the classroom. Teachers enjoy sharing the cultural celebrations with the girls the joy of it all.

Parents continue to support the school with their labor

The skyrocketing cost of food keeps climbing due to cost of gas to transport food staples to the mountains. Little by little work is improving with day jobs opening up again. But most poor families still barely get by. Whatever we grow at the school is a big help.

Returning visitors to CW school

Tourism is picking up daily and some request to volunteer at the school. Right now in July we have a volunteer who will be teaching English and Yoga over 3 weeks at the school. The girls are delighted to see them and learn new and different things.

Recent photos for you to enjoy. “A picture speaks a thousand words”

*CW wildly happy to be back at their beloved school & Classroom study is back

*Lunch containers are delivered to eager girls for the special sazon of our cooks.

*The Andean oven of every Andean farmer at the school cooking potatoes to snack on with friends and a yummy salsa.

Many blessings to us all for a brighter, pandemic free new reality.

Chicuchas Wasi School for Girls are back!
                  THANK YOU
Your support has made the difference!

CW's future when the (tuition-based ) 'Maria Tuition School' classes are filled, will be self-supporting. CoVid upset our plans to open the Maria school in 2020, but we are grateful that our CW large extended family is well. We plan to begin enrolling new students late in 2022.

NOTE: Thank you all for hanging in there with us. We have a little way to go yet but the impact of our work is self evident in the success of our girls...some are at the university today.
