Chicuchas Wasi School for Girls says MUCHAS GRACIAS for YOUR generosity,

What happens when you educate a girl?

Educating one girl will change her life, but others benefit as well; An educated girl will improve the life of her family, she will stay healthy, save money, build a business, empower her community, lift her country and change the world.

Educating the world's children is the single most important responsibility of the human race today and could end poverty. Yet in many countries, Girls still remain deprived of full and equal opportunities for education and Peru is just such a country.

Why is Chicuchas Wasi School different from public school?

CW school was created for rural girls unable to go to school due to poverty, gender bias and often very long distances to reach a public school. There is no public transportion to these areas. The ages of our students are 4 years old to 12 years and walking 3-5 miles to school (20 minutes in a school van) on muddy slippery roads and other hazards is unsafe for girls. We solved this dilemma with a tough school van able to travel over the unpaved, muddy and pot holed roads to reach the school. Our one large van serves 110 girls today with 6 trips over terrible roads that have taken a toll on the Van. A second school van will split the load and deliver our girls to and from school with fewer breakdowns. A large bus could not navigate these roads.

Thanks to YOU we have raised $8,051 toward the addition of a second school van. We are confident you will see the importance. Please tell your friends about this worthy cause. We must raise the balance of $66,900 to purchase a rugged van for these roads. No school transportation means no school for these girls.

YOUR donation really matters!   PLEASE DONATE TODAY

The CW secret style of teaching

Capturing student attention and holding it is difficult, but necessary for learning and creative Interactive learning is what we focus on with most subject matter and the results are terrific. The arts when incorporated into the subject lesson, get immediate attention and deliver easily those lessons directly to the girls. History lessons for example are often acted out with class made costumes, students do research for the story they will act out and a school history performance is created by several or all classes, then shared with all of the student. Everyone learns the history lesson and learning about their history is fun. Creative projects teach girls to think outside the box and dare to reach for something new and different.

One example is the enactment of the 'Inti Raymi' (Festival of the Sun) a religious ceremony of the Inca Empire in honor of the god Inti, one of the most venerated deities of the Inca religion. It was a celebration of the Winter Solstice. Students create their costumes out of recycled materials and research the history to learn the details needed to act it all out.

Mathematics is another subject where the girls engage with a practical lessons around shopping for food. We use mostly packaged goods for convenience, but teach about buying bulk items like rice, beans, lentils etc. that must be weighed out and priced per kilo. The girls set up a market at the school and using play money learn to quickly calculate the cost of something and the exchange of bills for coins in their heads. The students then go home and teach their families. Many mothers with little math skill are often cheated at the open market since they do not have these skills.
The understanding of mathematics is a daily need for us all. Chicuchas Wasi must also balance CW School expenses with the available funds. Each year is the question: Is austerity needed this year or are we able to fund all of our programs? So the practical lessons of managing money are included and the students take home these lessons to share with their families.

Teaching our girls to think out of the box continues when the two kindergarten classes create a Mother - Daughter project to create something to wear out of recycled materials. They set up a Runway for the girls to model their creation for the school on the National Day to honor Kindergarten students. The bonus is a deepening relationship between Mother and Daughter. Very creative outfits indeed!

“When we liberate girls with an education, they liberate those around them."
