English will provide future jobs for our girls...
Bilingual young women will always find work in Cusco!
Cusco is the historic home of the well known Inca Empire, Machu Picchu and popular tourist attractions worldwide today. Young people who can speak English will always find work in many areas of Cusco's tourist industry. Frequently travelers come to visit our school and in 2014 a tourist named Pamela came to learn about our Chicuchas Wasi (CW) School for rural Girls. She was so taken by our school girls, their passion to learn and the charm of our 112 girls that she suggested and sponsored our first English class that continues today.
Pamela's keen eye took in the broad focus of CW's many programs and the unique educational style of the school. We teach values like Honesty, Generosity, Respect etc., a value posted over each classroom door, and take pride in the teacher/student relationships and bonding, the open affection of our students, and their enthusiasm for their education. She saw the value of adding English to prepare them for more future job options and acted. THANK YOU Pamela.

Our first classes were small (shown above), but in time we discovered better results with larger and more interactive classes and found a more experienced English teacher with Ivan as well. He has been with us for 3 years now. We expanded in 2017 adding 2 intense 2 hour classes every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, extending the school day until 5pm on those days. The top image shows the class today, combining 3 grades at a time with good results.
We teach age-related English in the following: grades 1, 2 and 3 learn vocabulary, animals word repetition for speaking and visual word recognition and singing songs. Grades 4, 5 & 6 learn to converse with sentences, courtesy interaction words, pronunciation and comprehension of the exchange. Our students will graduate to high school already able to converse in English.
Our Alumnae girls tell CW staff and students at CW school to take advantage of this English program, because in public high school they will not have this opportunity.

“There are more than 500 million adolescent girls living in the developing world today. Every one of them can potentially help break the cycle of intergenerational poverty, with ripple effects multiplying across her society.” – Anthony Lake, Executive Director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)
