School Meetings, a Girl's Story, and Other Updates

By Mercedes Ward | Pakistan Project Manager

Dear Girls Ed Supporters,

Thank you for your commitment to girls’ education. With your support, this Girls Education International (Girls Ed) project is increasing access to education for 60 girls across five villages in Chakwal district. Students also benefit from the leadership and advocacy of our partner organization, Bedari.

Between January and March of this year, Bedari gathered feedback from students, teachers, and administrators at the schools and colleges Girls Ed-supported students attend. In one of these meetings, students expressed concerns over the timing of their annual exams, which were scheduled to overlap with the wheat harvesting season in April, a time during which they would have greater household responsibilities. To ensure the students would have sufficient study time to prepare, the Principal announced that there would be extra classes for all students beginning in March.

We were delighted to hear that the school administration also noted that girls affiliated with the Girls Ed program consistently excel academically compared to their peers. We believe the students’ success reflects the emphasis that the Bedari team places on engaging with communities, as well as encouraging and mentoring students and advocating on their behalf. For example, last November Bedari arranged awareness-raising sessions as part of 16 Days of Activism (Nov 25–Dec 10) to educate and empower female students on various aspects related to women's rights, gender discrimination, and violence against women.

We also know that the students’ success reflects their own commitment to education, as evident in this story we received about Areesha, one of the students supported through the Girls Ed program.

Areesha… is a very capable girl, but due to her father's inability to work because of an accident, she couldn't afford the expenses of studying outside the village. Areesha shared that she has a great passion for education because she wants to become a software engineer. Since childhood, Areesha has admired the young Pakistani software engineer, Arfa Karim. She also wants to achieve something similar in the field of software. Areesha mentioned that the day she became a monitor (a student entrusted with certain responsibilities and authority within the school) in her school, she felt very happy. She enjoys wearing the monitor's badge around her neck. Areesha wants to establish her own identity. She expressed her deep love for her parents and doesn't want to see them facing financial difficulties.

Areesha’s confidence is compelling; all of us at Girls Ed believe she can achieve the things she aspires to achieve!

Amid these uplifting stories, we also have some very sad news: in early 2024, a student and a Bedari team member both passed away due to health issues (see Bedari’s Facebook posts here and here). These two individuals were inspirations to all who knew them, and their untimely passing is heartbreaking. We extend our deepest sympathies to their families and loved ones. Girls Ed recognizes that there are inequities in access to healthcare that contribute to health-related challenges that many of the girls and their families face. We know that the specific support our project provides does not address all economic and social barriers they face. Given these hard realities, it is important that each of us does what we can to push for systemic changes (to learn more about the diverse ways that individual change-makers are doing this, we invite you to listen to the Girls Education International podcast).

Finally, on an administrative note, you may have noticed a change to our GlobalGiving project title. The new name better reflects our partnership with Bedari (for more about our current Memorandum of Understanding, please see our previous report).

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions at info@girlsed.org

With sincere gratitude,

Mercedes Ward
