Challenge

Most Vista Hermosa Center students hail from the steep hillside slums surrounding Jocotenango, Guatemala. Extreme poverty and gang membership cause many local youth to drop out of school after only a few years. Others never enter school to begin with. The cost of uniforms, supplies, and public school enrollment fees is just too great, especially for families with 7, 8, or more children. Without an education, these young people have little hope of escaping the cycle of poverty they were born into

Solution

The Vista Hermosa Center offers free, accelerated elementary and middle school education and technical training for students up to 26 years of age. Through the Vista Hermosa Center, drop-outs go Back to School and succeed despite their difficult backgrounds.

Long-Term Impact

The Vista Hermosa Center currently provides 144 children and young adults with the education they need to break the chains of poverty.
