Beginning of october the new school year has started in the 5 nursery schools we are supporting. There are in total 280 children of 5 years old in those schools.
It is always difficult to start the schools on October 1st, as planned. Parents are in the fields to start the harvest and children of 5 years old are with their mother for teh girls or are used to keep the cattle away from the cultivated fields for the boys.
Normally we have about 50% girls and 50% boys in the schools. This year it is only 40% girls. This decrease is mainly explained by the poor yields expected from the fields due to very early stopped of the rainy season. The fathers who decide about the schooling of children choose their sons against daughters. Girls will leave the family when they get married. Boys can help the parents in their old age.
We want to motivate the parents to send their girls to the nursery schools. If girls have started schooling in nursery school it will be easier for them to attend primary school.
The motivation will be to give one chicken to girls attending school this year. This chicken will be a source of additional income for the family: eggs, other chickens.
For this campaign we are looking for donations of 5US$ (cost of one chicken). Those chicken will be given in the middle of this school year.
