Summary

This project will help 40 rescued children/adolescents learn important skills in sewing and garment making so that they can build a future for themselves, their families and communities. Identified through established referral pathways, each student will be given access to trained staff, materials and sewing equipment to develop the necessary skills to find a job with local manufacturers or even set up their own businesses.

Challenge

It is estimated that 40% of children in Cameroon are at risk of physical or sexual abuse, the majority of which occurs as a result of trafficking. Traffickers target homeless children and adolescents from economically disadvantaged families with the promise of education or a better life in urban areas. Victims lose all ties with their families, miss out on important schooling and many are left traumatized by their experiences. It is the aim of GLOWA to rehabilitate those who have fallen victim,

Solution

GLOWA is developing a modular program to provide for all aspects of victim rehabilitation, from filling educational gaps, to legal, healthcare, social and skills development. This particular project focuses on building marketable skills in sewing and garment making. The module has been developed in close collaboration with an Atlanta-based fashion design school which helps students develop their own brands and businesses. Funding is now sought to launch the module.

Long-Term Impact

In addition to helping students find work locally or even establish their own businesses, the project aims to develop its own 'survivor brand' so that clothing that can be sold to local businesses and organisations to help support longer term funding of the project. This will enable the project to scale-up over time to support a greater number of those who have been affected by trafficking across the region.
