Your unwavering support has been instrumental in dismantling the fear, shame and stigma of menstruation in Nepal. Thank you for making a tangible difference in the lives of women and girls living in the Kailali District.
In Kailali, the now illegal practice of Chhaupadi Pratha (Chhaupadi, for short) continues to place women and girls in vulnerable situations. Chhaupadi is a social tradition of monthly isolation practiced by people who menstruate. Once a month, for about 5-7 days, women and girls are required to self-isolate from daily activities and are prohibited from participating in family events. In 2005, Nepal’s Supreme Court banned Chhaupadi, recognizing it as a human rights violation. For those who continue the tradition, women and girls are expected to sleep outdoors in small outdoor shelters. Due to extreme conditions, this practice places them in danger of hypothermia, sexual abuse, asphyxiation, and insect and animal-related bites.
The Days for Girls (DfG) Nepal team combats these risks through three key strategies:
(1) Building community awareness: Through menstrual health (MH) education and advocacy initiatives, team members work to dismantle the harmful myths and misconceptions surrounding menstruation, fostering understanding and acceptance in communities.
(2) Strengthening local support networks: Partnering with local organizations and individuals, DfG Nepal engaged women’s circles and the wider community in discussions on Chhaupadi and menstrual health. DfG Nepal creates safe spaces and support systems where women and girls can access resources, share experiences and find strength in solidarity.
(3) Empowering health and hygiene: By distributing sustainable, washable pads, menstrual products and hygiene information, our team provides individuals with the necessary tools and knowledge to safely manage their periods, regardless of their environments. Products are also manufactured locally to support the livelihoods of community members in the district.
Together, we have equipped more than 60 women and girls with DfG Kits and MH education. Your commitment strengthens voices, empowers communities and reminds every woman and girl that their well-being matters.
To measure the project's impact, we conducted 10 focus group discussions with individuals of all genders across the community, involving a total of 497 participants. Participant feedback indicates that DfG programs in Kailali are pivotal in reshaping individual and community perspectives and encouraging the abandonment of harmful menstruation-related practices. Results prove that our MH curriculum and education initiatives spark respectful and important conversations around Chhaupadi, allowing individuals to analyze potential outcomes, benefits and risks through informed decision-making.
Based on feedback from focus group discussions, we have observed a positive shift in perceptions and attitudes from participants. Presented in their own words, these testimonials were provided by individuals who speak English as a second language. The provided quotes were not altered in order to maintain integrity and its original form of speech.
On behalf of the Days for Girls team in Nepal, thank you again for supporting the critical work we are doing. Your generous contributions have been a catalyst for change, advancing us toward a future where menstruation is embraced with understanding and women and girls can live in dignity. We could not have done it without you!
