Street-connected girls in Nigeria face stigma, exclusion from education, and lack safe recreational spaces. Many are exposed to drugs, violence, and exploitation. This project will use skateboarding as a tool to engage them in safe activities, build confidence, and teach teamwork. With structured training, mentorship, and life-skills sessions, we will provide a positive alternative to street life and give these girls opportunities to grow in safer environments.
Many street-connected girls lack safe activities and positive role models. They often experience abuse, hunger, and exploitation while being excluded from schools and community programs. Without structured activities, they spend time on unsafe streets where drug abuse, violence, and crime are common. This leaves them vulnerable to exploitation and poor health while also reinforcing cycles of poverty and social neglect.
The project will introduce skateboarding sessions as a safe and engaging activity for street-connected girls. They will receive skateboards, safety gear, and structured training. Sessions will be paired with mentorship and life-skills workshops, providing both recreation and guidance. This combination will reduce exposure to unsafe street life, create supportive peer groups, and introduce positive adult role models who can guide the girls toward healthier lifestyles.
Girls who participate will develop confidence, teamwork, and discipline through skateboarding. They will also gain life skills that can help them transition from street life to education or vocational paths. In the long run, the program can reduce risks of exploitation, drug use, and early pregnancies. It can also shift community attitudes by showing the potential of these girls when given safe spaces and opportunities to thrive.
