SHE Public Health Expansion
By Angela D. Coleman | President
Sisterhood Agenda is excited to announce the expansion of its SHE Sisters Healthy & Empowered initiative by creating and implementing a new trauma-informed public health prevention strategy that includes a holistic and innovative approach with: a healing paradigm, youth programs, adult workshops, a multi-media national campaign, and digital mentoring.
The newly expanded comprehensive SHE initiative will address the top health issues that disproportionately affect African American females:
- Obesity and overweight
- Reproductive health: HIV/AIDS, uterine fibroids, sexually transmitted infections, teen pregnancy
- Cancer including breast and cervical
- Stroke
- Violence
- Mental health and suicide
- Substance abuse
The foundation of the new SHE project is the understanding of trauma, both present and historical, and its effects on women’s and girls’ health. Sisterhood Agenda’s supportive, informed sisterhood network can help reduce the incidence of these negative outcomes and promote healthy behavior. Sisterhood Agenda will announce its new initiative during National Women’s Health Week May 11-17, 2014. We look forward to this new project and the many people that it will benefit from it!

Hike in VI National Park
It is no secret that Black females are disproportionately represented among those who are affected by obesity/overweight. SHE: Sisters Healthy & Empowered now has a new resource with the publication of the new book, Black Girls Guide: How to Lose Weight Fast & Forever, published this month.
Annually, Sisterhood Agenda celebrates National Women’s Health Week in Cruz Bay, St. John. However, this year, the Office on Women’s Health is no longer funding these activities. Since Sisterhood Agenda has implemented SHE for the past three years, we plan to continue with private funding, even if we have to scale down our activities.
One of our local activities in St. John is hiking, which takes advantage of over 40 beautiful hiking trails maintained by the Virgin Islands National Park. With SHE: Sisters Healthy & Empowered and its holistic approach to well-being, we continue to provide resources and valuable services to prevent negative health outcomes that plague too many women and girls.

Being Healthy Throughout the Year
By Angela D. Coleman | President
After the successful Women’s Health Week event in May 2013, Sisterhood Agenda promotes healthy living and lifestyles all year through its blog. SHE Sisters Healthy & Empowered posts on sisterhoodagenda.com include the following topics: knowing your HIV status, hepatitis, volunteerism, walking for wellness, golf sensation Ginger Howard, suicide prevention, and Sisterhood Agenda Global Partner Awards.
In addition to the SHE: Sisters, Healthy & Empowered annual event, Sisterhood Agenda Enterprises, LLC will publish an important book about losing weight and maintaining health. Written by Sisterhood Agenda President, Angela D. Coleman, Black Girls Guide: How to Lose Weight Fast & Forever is the fourth book in the Black Girls Guide book series: www.blackgirlguide.com. The book series is a how-to publication and valuable resource for Black females, particularly young African American women.
Sisterhood Agenda will also include health issues as an integral part of its upcoming webinar series in 2014.
