Our SHE: Sisters Healthy & Empowered project was not selected for federal funding, but our spirits are not deterred!
Sisterhood Agenda has been addressing the health, cultural and social issues of women and girls of African descent for twenty years. Through our work, we have discovered how trauma, both present and historical, can have disturbing effects on the health, self-sufficiency, and welfare of woman and girls. We are committed to helping women and girls heal for positive physical and emotional health and well-being.
The most vulnerable age group is 15-18 years old where the impact of traumatic violence expresses itself in unwanted pregnancies, reproductive health complications, and sexually transmitted infections. This is also the time in life when young women’s hopes and aspirations for the future are often derailed and life-changing economic decisions are made.
Our goal is to create a female empowerment model where causes and effects of trauma are understood, thereby increasing awareness and support and allowing the healing process of mind and body to establish a strong foundation of empowerment and resilience.
Sisterhood Agenda recently received local support from the Rotary of St. John for its SHE: Sisters Healthy & Empowerred program-we are grateful for this support! Our plan is to leverage these funds to generate interest and raise additional dollars to help our sisters in need, particularly our girls.
Last year, Sisterhood Agenda submitted two proposals to private foundations-we did not receive one of them and we are still waiting to hear back from the other. Your support is making a difference! Specifically, we are raising funds to hire a part-time program coordinator, purchase fitness supplies for water sports, and for project staff to attend trauma training at The Trauma Resolution Center in Miami, Florida.
Sisterhood Agenda will also hold retreats at the new
Sisterhood Empowerment Academy (SEA) for adult women, all in the spirit of sisterhood. These retreats are in high demand and we look forward to offering this unique service.
There is more to come and we look forward to having a very productive year with SHE!
