Summary

This project will build up to 500 temporary homes and rehabilitate broken water supply infrastructure in the earthquake ravaged Kavre/Sindhupalchok area of Nepal. 500 families who lost their homes, their grain stores and their belongings to a devastating earthquake in May of 2015, will have shelter and clean water again. Protected from the winter cold these families will then be able to focus on rebuilding the livelyhoods they lost.

Challenge

The Kavre/Sindhupalchok area of Nepal was one of the hardest hit by an earthquake in May 12th, 2015. Thousands of poor farming families lost their homes and their livelyhoods. To date earthquake victims have received little help from their government. They have no shelters to protect them from the cold winter, and contaminated water from broken delivery systems presents a health hazard particularly for young children and the elderly.

Solution

Our project will help up to 500 poor families build new shelters (families and community provide the labor), and rehabilitate the broken water infrastructure. We thus are providing for their basic physical security. We reduce the health risk from exposure to the elements and unsanitary living conditions. We are protecting children from the longterm effects of homelessness. And we a allow parents to refocus their energies on the recreation of lost livelyhoods.

Long-Term Impact

500 new homes may seem like a drop in the bucket considering the extent of the destruction this area has suffered. However, it also means that 500 families can turn to normalizing their lives, creating new livelyhoods and mending their torn communities. Stabilizing these remote communities will hopefully also stem the exodus of men in search of work opportunities abroad.
