Shelter for Abused Girls in Sierra Leone

By Jennifer Nardozzi | Board Member and U.S. Representative

Dear Friends, Donors, Family and Colleagues:

We are happy to report that we have installed the solar panels in our facility, thanks to the generrous donation from the Mohsin and Fauzia Jaffer Foundation. The Mohsin and Fauzia Jaffer Foundation in its donation to commit+act, included an amount for us to establish our garden where the girls will be taught how to plant vegetables that will contribute to their good health and provide them with nutritious diets.

As a result of our giving these emotionally and physically abused girls a home where they could feel safe and taken care of, some of the girls who came to the shelter, have given birth. To help them with their babies, we established a Baby Shelter to take care of these babies and to educate their young mothers on how to care of them.

We have created a ravine on the property so as to protect the structure from flooding, which has happened in the past and continue to plague the country as well.

With the increase in the number of girls that we are housing in our shelter, along with the additional responsibillity for the care and treatment of the newborns, we have had to employ additional help so we increased the number of staff we have at the Shelter.

Now, we are focused on developing more educational programs for these girls, programs that will teach them the basic elementary and secondary education, to give them the fortification so that they will learn how to take care of themselves, basic and important hygiene and how to be able to take care of the needs of their children who will grow up in this troubled atmosphere. We believe that education, which is not prevalent in the country, is a big need not just for these girls in the shelter, but also to educate the young women who were born and live in the country to help them from becoming victims of emotional and physical abuse that is so common in poverty areas, specially since Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world.

We are grateful for your donations. We appreciate the continued support of our friends and family and we are sincerely touched when we receive donations from new donors and new friends. We hope and pray for your continued support and good will.

With deep appreciation,

Jennifer Nardozzi, PsyD
