Erling comes from a farming family, born in La Libertad, Chontales (Central side of Nicaragua), he lived there until the age of seven, according to what he remembers, his parents made the decision to move to the Rio San Juan region (Southeast of Nicaragua) to a community called Los Chiles in the Municipality of San Carlos, looking for better lands for planting and improvement for the family, he settled in this place until the age of twenty years old, after his high school education finished he married and moved to the Ojo de Agua community where he currently lives with his wife and daughter.
Erling told us that he has a great experience in agriculture and continued saying: I grew up in a family that worked the land, always planting corn, beans and rice, for the family's food, feeding the animals and selling the surplus. Through my grandparents and parents I learned this work and I copied everything from them in the traditional planting and field work model and I thought I already knew everything about agriculture.
However, he continued saying: In 2019 I had the great surprise of understanding that I had to learn more about agriculture such as new planting methods, techniques and technologies as we received a visit from the Agriculture Program technician Rodolfo Hernández of the Self Help International, who came promoting a variety of corn called INTA Nutrader and a new way of planting, he told us about the characteristics of corn and a short explanation of the mission and vision of the organization he work with saying that their priority is to support farmers in the rural area of Nicaragua specially in the Rio San Juan area.
The following week the technician trained us how to implement the double row technique, agronomic management and corn care in the first 45 days, then he gave 4 pounds of INTA-Nutrader corn to each one of the 12 farmers that were members of the Ojo de Agua community group. My farm was choose to implement such experimentation, and at the time of planting the plot with the double row technique I thought it was something difficult to manage it and time-consuming, because we were using a rope to guide us, the sowing was very close and sowing two grains per stroke, a very abrupt change regarding the sowing process since I was used to doing traditional sowing and what I usually did was to put 4 to 5 seeds per stroke and without using any rope, in the traditional way was a faster sowing and greater progress in covering ground I thought.
But I changed my mind when I saw the yield results of that experimental plot as I remember that by that time we established 22 double rows corn, it was fertilized twice since at that time the prices of fertilizers and chemicals were very high in the country, we also took good care of pests and diseases, but the management was carried out in a traditional way. At the time of harvest I was surprised by the results because in such little planted land I obtained the amount of 4 red bags that are approximately equivalent to 8 bushels. In conclusion, I told myself I believe this type of planting is feasible, and I also noted that the corn presented good adaptation in the area and mainly does not have many ears with peeled tips, an important characteristic that farmers looks for in the corn so that it does not rot in the field since the rains here are very constant.
The fact is that the variety has good taste, my wife is fascinated with this variety and it is the one we currently consume and since 2019 until now it is the only variety that I am planting in both planting cycles (Summer and winter) every year, now planting a larger area 1 hectare each year to be exact since I do not want to return to the traditional way or use the old seeds because they do not have the nutritional benefits as the INTA – Nutrader.
It was in this same year that I and the other members of the group were given the opportunity to opt for a loan, always through the agriculture program promoted by Self – Help International. I was chosen as the leader of the group in my community then I chose the most responsible and hard-working people in the community to apply for financing since there were members of the group who were indebted to other entities and I could not allow us to remain bad with the organization that was helping us to grow in all ways possibles. I feared that those members would ask for a loan from Self – Help International and then cancel those debts with other institutions and not use the money for what was actually being requested, after the consolidation of the group only 5 out of the 12 farmers remained in the group. Personally, I could not refuse the financing opportunity from Self – Help International since as I mentioned before the inputs used for agriculture were very expensive, so I took the credit and the seeds for planting and since then I have not stopped working with the support of Self – Help International.
The yield of my crops is now excellent compared to what I had when I used to work with the traditional way, now I obtain double yield of what I had before, therefore my profits can be seen and I invest in things and products that I would not have achieved even in my dreams if I had stayed the way I have been working since my childhood. Now I have a new mentality and it is to continue growing, improving my quality of life by buying work tools, products and things to live a more dignified life with my family.
In recent years I have been able to buy many things, among them was the purchase of a gas stove for my wife as she used to cook on a traditional wooden stove since we got married and now she does it with this new stove and that allows her to be healthier because she does not have to breath the smoke anymore, or having to get up so early to prepare the food. I also bought a power sprayer for agriculture for my personal use which makes it easier for me to apply the synthetic products that I use in my planting fields such as (herbicides, pesticides and foliar products). Another benefit that I have obtained is buying three cows that have turned out very well. good at producing milk and I also purchased a solar panel to have light in the house since my community is rural and we do not have public electricity service yet.
I have currently been working with Self – Help International for 5 years and I feel grateful because, through the training and the support they have given me I have changed my way of work and the benefits are visible thank the donors who support the farmers of Nicaragua through the Self - Help International and I hope this program could continue supporting many more farmers in the country to continue improving their nutrition, quality of life and continue teaching others to help themselves for the common good of all.
And I also urge the farmers in the area to carry out the double row technique to obtain better yields, make better use of the soil, lower production costs as long as we follow the recommendations of the Agriculture Program officer that help us improve the agriculture of our productive units and I can only say that I feel proud to be part of the farmers who are supported by Self – Help International through the Agriculture Program, and I want to keep working with them because I still need to improve in several ways. Thanks you.
