Challenge

The project focuses on marginalised women evicted from national parks (their traditional homes) for the creation of national tourist parks without any compensation. Education and employment opportunities for young women are a vivid reminder gender inequality is a debilitating issue in Rwanda. Educational dropouts for girls are particularly high around Volcanoes National Park area due to expanding household responsibilities, lacking school fees and uninspiring educational methods.

Solution

The idea of meeting basic needs to alleviate poverty, is provided by an approach focussing on human capabilities, to empower women to exercise their right to be fully human. 'Tuvemubukene', literally defined as 'to get out of poverty' in Kinyarwanda, has multifaceted determinants that cause and can alleviate poverty. In reaction to this, the centre will be a place where women realise their capabilities, through access to opportunities to learn and expand freedoms.

Long-Term Impact

Rwanda is one of the most pro-female countries globally (Women Deliver, 2023). This has filtered into the highest echelons of political power in Rwanda, where 61.4% of Rwanda's Parliament are today made up of women which is the highest of the top state institutions globally. Now it is time to create bottom-up, community-based implementations of Rwanda's gender equality successes via: - Capacity building - Women engagement - Independence, autonomy, and self-reliance
