We are buying the truck this week! Funds raised in the Thanksgiving offering by Village Church in Gurnee, Illinois have been received. As I write this our Board Chairman, Theo Kollie is looking for exactly the right vehicle, a locking truck shell, spare tires and other maintenance parts. Our new truck should be on a ship by the end of the month, well before the beginning of the next rainy season. Then Dr. Chris can retire her old car or keep it for dry season/paved use only.

One of our regular, generous donors has provided all of the additional funds required for transportation and customs fees. It is expected that the Atlantic transit will take about 30 days. Soon our new truck will be joining the 15 passenger van we shipped last year, making regular trips to the 34 communities we now serve.

Thank you so much for another successful project conclusion! Now we shift our attention to the construction of our new Medical Center facility.

Ship Our Truck by Year-end!

In July we thought we had secured all of the the funding we needed to purchase a new truck. In fact we had the vehicle picked out and were actively planning the shipment. Then we discovered that we didn't have enough for the purchase.

At the same time a major donor came forward unexpectly, offering to fund a major portion of our Medical Facility Construction Project. our top priority project for 2014, Another organization, a specialist in construction management, offered to provide full-time on-site project management for all phases of the building construction, which we expect will take two years. With meetings, discussion, proposals and contracts for the buidling project, we got distracted, a major pitfall in an all volunteer organization.

The good news is the facility project is moving ahead smoothly. In November a church in Illinois heard about the shorfall in our truck project funding and offered to donate half of their Thanksgiving offering to make up the difference. We climbed out of the pit. Now with funding in hand we are back on track, but still need additional funds to cover the shipping costs for the truck. Dry season is short, we are refocused on getting the truck purchased and shipped by year-end.

Ship Our Truck to Liberia

We are working every day to improve the health and welfare of the people of Margibi County, Liberia with an emphasis on preventative healthcare for women and their children. Healthy Women, Healthy Liberia (HWHL) has just completed our first full year of operations in Liberia. The first six months focused on getting Dr. Chris settled, validating our community information, constructing a temporary clinic space, and building relationships in each community. Today the mini clinic constructed in the yard of Dr. Chris’ home operates daily, 7 days a week, and we are working regularly in each of the 33 communities surrounding Kakata.

It's rainy season now, which lasts from April until November. During rainy season the roads wash out or become rivers of mud isolating some villages. To solve the problem we are training community health workers who live in the villages with the most people at risk. However, there are still medical needs that require a doctor visit. In addition there is need to deliver medications and supplies. For these times we need a vehicle that is capable of navigating the mud. The older Subaru wagon that Dr. Chris bought used a few years ago is not expected to last another year.

This project provides the funds that allow us to ship a replacement vehicle to Liberia, so we can continue to meet the enormous need for health education and care. We have been working with groups in the US to raise the funds required to purchase a vehicle capable of navigating the muddy Liberian roads during rainy season. Now we need to raise the funds to shipping the vehicle from the US. We shipped a 15 passenger van last year so we have a clear idea of the process and the cost. The new vehicle should be ready to ship by the end of October.
