Summary

South Africa has the largest HIV epidemic in the world, with approx. 400 000 children aged 0-19 years living with HIV. Our goal is to keep this vulnerable population in care, however it is this group where deaths due to AIDS is not decreasing due to a number of factors. CHIVA provides a holistic approach to these challenges that improves and sustains services for our youth so they can live a long and healthy life. We invite you to join us on this journey to provide a future for our young people!

Challenge

HIV/AIDs is one of the main causes of death in young people as they are still not receiving appropriate services. Children rely on caregivers to access health services & unfortunately many are lost to follow-up. A lack of skills for adequate testing, paediatric ARVs & child-friendly programmes; contributes to their vulnerability. The challenges faced by adolescents includes denial, poor adherence & disclosure counselling resulting in a poor understanding of the future benefits of treatment.

Solution

CHIVA's approach is to identify specific challenges facilities face & to skill all cadres of staff to improve standards of treatment & care. Improvements are monitored & examples of best practice are shared. CHIVA identifies that a combination of efforts are required to support young people living with HIV. 'You took us from nowhere to a better performing institution - the knowledge, skills, paediatric ART, disclosure and management. We appreciated your presence.' Manager: Mnyamana Clinic, KZN

Long-Term Impact

The program is an on-site facility based intervention which strengthens health and community systems. Healthcare workers develop the clinical and managerial competencies required to improve and sustain services for children and young people in their community. The primary beneficiary of this support is the health care worker and the health and community systems within a facility operates. The secondary and extended beneficiaries are children, adolescents, their families and the wider community.
