Three-fingered sloths and burglar bars

Saving a sloth with help of fire department
Saving a sloth with help of fire department

Since our last report at the end of 2022, we have received reports of 35 animals in need of our help. Lately, the cases have been especially tricky. Many wounded animals came in from road accidents, hanging in power lines, and caught up in other perilous situations.

Among the three babies we had in our care at the end of 2022, Sheep remained at the center, while Mailo and Cleo were given a soft release near our facility. For weeks, we have had the pleasure of watching them explore the trees, growing stronger and more independent by the day.

One thing we must mention is our amazing collaboration with the fire department. We had a particularly challenging rescue recently when a three-fingered sloth had fled in a pole connecting power lines to the houses. Despite our best efforts standing on a long ladder, we were unable to retrieve the animal, so we called in the fire department. With two ladders against the pole, and the assistance of a fire woman, we finally brought the sloth down. Unfortunately, two of his claws had been bitten off by a vicious dog, leaving him severely distressed. However, we brought the animal to our vet for treatment and are happy to report he is now on the mend.

We also had an intense five-hour rescue when a three-fingered sloth hanging from a power line was reported. The sloth accidentally bumped into a wasps nest and was viciously attacked by the wasps. Our team had to take cover in their van until the fire department arrived to remove the nest. With the power cut off by the energy company, we were finally able to rescue the sloth and take it to the vet for treatment of the swelling. Thankfully, the animal has recovered and is already back to its normal appetite.

Over the past few months, we've seen a surprising trend of three-fingered sloths getting themselves trapped in burglar bars unable to find their way out without our assistance. One sloth was even stuck under a roof. We have no idea how it got itself in there, and we could not believe there was an animal under the roof at all. On our second attempt, we were able to free it.

The release of our xenarthran patients back into their natural habitats makes it all worthwhile. We could not have done any of this without the incredible support of our donors and volunteers. Despite the challenges, it is incredibly fulfilling to see these once-injured animals return to the wild. Thank you so much for being a part of our journey!
