More baby sloths and other stories...

Zoomed in we see hiding in mamas fur, a baby sloth

It has been a busy period since our last report to you. We finished the mural with the help of a local Batik Group under the direction of local artist Sri Irodikromo. She painted beautiful armadillos for us, and her group completed the mural with elaborate leaves, flowers, and other exciting details.

And something we had never seen before happened at the end of that afternoon. We spotted an active two-fingered sloth in a tree next to our building – remember, two-fingered sloths are nocturnal! We all watched her when Sri asked me: “Does she have a baby?” And we tried to see it with a pair of binoculars, we took pictures with a zoom lens, but no… Until I looked at the photos on my computer and clearly could see a baby nose peering at us. It was the first time we had seen a two-fingered sloth at our center with a baby!

As it was in the last days of our English intern, who had especially come for the sloths that were not showing up, this was a nice gift for her. And as her internship ended, we suddenly saw an increase in sloth rescue reports. We had 7 rescues in January, 4 in February, 5 in March, 12 in April. Then a sudden unexplainable peak in May with 21 animals reported. And June, we went back to 8 rescues. And for July, we have already surpassed the number of June. We still cannot explain why this is. We found two animals this past week, which we suspect were kept as pets.

On a completely different note, we held a Volunteer Appreciation Party at the end of June and honored two of our volunteers with the Sloth Award. Both of them have volunteered for over 15 years. Natascha shared her finance expertise, while Sharen shared her love for animals since she was a teenager. And we are very proud that Sharen is now studying to become a veterinary doctor!

And on the 8th of July, I was honored by the French Government with a high distinction for my environmental work, the “Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur.” And I wish to end my report for today with a citation from my acceptance speech: “But I did not get here alone! I feel humbled and would not be standing here if I did not have the support of my parents and family, my incredible volunteers, and my colleagues. The Green Heritage Fund Suriname, founded in 2005, also would be unable to do its work without our donors, sponsors, and partner organizations.” Thank you all for supporting our work! (and yes, I was wearing a dress!)
