Dear our friends and our donors,
Greetings,
There truly is strength in numbers. There truly is strength in passionate support and in generous donations, With all of your generous donations and unwavering support, we have further energized the women empowerment project! We have already made a lasting impact on the lives of survivors of the genocide in Darfur.
Just recently on March 19, 2022, we celebrated International Women’s Day. Darfur Women Network celebrates International Women’s Day many times a year. Every accomplishment we achieve deserves a celebration, and without your support, we would not be where we are today!
Darfur Women Network is committed to serving the survivors of the genocide in Darfur and their current devastating situation. On October 2nd, we conducted a second workshop where we trained 27 more women from four displaced camps who fled their villages due to attacks by Sudanese government military and militia. Due to these attacks, over 400,000 of their loved ones were killed, their valuable resources were destroyed, and their villages were burned to the ground. Currently, our beneficiaries live with their children in crowed camps or are scattered around resettlement areas in cities. They have never had access to education, skills, stable jobs, or social services. In fact, most of their children dropped out of school to join the child labor market just to survive.
The Soap Making Project by Darfur Women Network targets women and their families whose lives have been negatively impacted by decades of conflict in Darfur since 2003. The majority of these internally displaced people are women and children. In addition to the challenges with mental and psychological wellbeing, these families are suffering from poor physical conditions resulting from lack of access to basic social services, such as health, education, water, and sanitation. Continuous conflict in the region has further subjected these vulnerable communities to violence and lack of protection, which in turn places tremendous challenges to their livelihood and wellbeing.
The positive impact/progress:
1. We purchased and shipped raw materials/ ingredients for soap bars, liquid, and detergent over 800 miles to use for training 27 new displaced women in soap making and in production (soap production) for our fourth month.
2.The 27 new trainees gained technical skills, knowledge, and entrepreneur skills, and worked together as a a team to make high quality soap bars, liquid soap, and detergent.
3. Our new trainees have joined previous trainees who were part of the project and have been making soaps since the last training ended in October 2021. They are earning a steady income which allows them to provide food, education, health care, and shelters for their children. This also will allow their children, who were previously working to survive, to go back to school and attain a higher level of education to secure a better future.
4. The DWN has also helped our beneficiaries with marketing to further expand their reach. We make appealing professional labels to help with this aim.
5. The DWN is committed to providing a safe works place, tools, equipment, raw materials, and technical support and consultation to our beneficiaries.
Our overall impact includes the training for the production of hygienic items , sale them for reasonable prices in four displaced camps, two healthcare clinics, and an entire neighborhood where Darfur Women Network’s Women Center is located.
Our current challenge: transportation and communication
