Whenever I think about how I almost quitted school a year ago yet still managed to continue with my education today, I am overwhelmed and feel very grateful because of SOAR Foundation!
In the past year, I have been working really hard in balancing my school work and my life in general, but most importantly in fighting a battle with my own weaknesses. I feel there are many hands behind me that supported me through this process, which give me the courage to keep pushing forward and never give up! I believe that endurance and persistence lead to victory!
During this journey with SOAR, I have become more optimistic. I believe hardship can be overcome. At times when I don’t know where the money would come from for next month’s living cost, I will just try to focus on making good arrangement for this month. I believe there is always a way out, and that things will eventually get better. As if to prove my point, my dad’s legs became stronger last year and he managed to plant some crops in our land (dad’s legs don’t function properly due to previous injury and mom left us forever). Although the price for the crops is a bit low, the production is high. During the Fall School Break, I helped with harvesting the crops. In order to save time, dad and I loaned a machine to peel off the leaves of the corn cobs we picked from the field. My job is to pick up the peeled corn cobs with baskets. I must guarantee that the basket was quickly put in the right position. Once a basket is filled up, I must promptly remove the basket, put an empty basket at the same position, and at the same time dump the peeled corn cobs. I felt like I was competing with the machine for speed. Fortunately I didn’t lose. I did get tired though. It seems that agricultural automation is in the trend. That is good, everything will be fine in the end.
When the new semester began, I was so fortunate to receive the scholarship from SOAR. The scholarship for me is like bonfire for someone stuck in snow or water for a thirsty man in a desert. Daddy’s frown face turned upside down and became a big smiley face :) “There are so many kind people in the world. You must think about how to show your appreciation. ” I told him that the best way for me to show appreciation is to work hard and get good grades, and more importantly be a good person. I have strong belief in myself and the society. No matter what happens, I will keep working hard and improving myself, so as to meet the expectations of my dad, teachers, relatives, and friends, last but not the least the SOAR Foundation volunteers and donors that I haven’t met but have helped me generously. I will try to be someone useful to the society.
