This project uses soccer and life skills sessions to support orphans and vulnerable young people in urban and gangaffected areas of Abuja, including Nyanya, Karu, Jikwoyi, Kurudu, Karshi, and Orozo. Through regular training and mentoring, young people build teamwork, discipline, confidence, and positive behaviour. Activities include soccer coaching, conflict resolution, health talks, and peer support in safe community spaces.
Young people growing up in areas like Nyanya, Karu, Jikwoyi, Kurudu, Karshi, and Orozo face high risks of crime, recruitment into gangs, and conflict. Parts of Abuja see ongoing violent incidents including armed robberies, kidnappings and urban crimes such as theft and snatching, even as overall crime has slightly fallen in the wider city. Local residents report pickpocketing, bike snatching, and harassment in these dense suburbs.
This project creates safe spaces for youth to meet for soccer and life skills learning. Coaches trained in positive guidance help young people improve physical health, learn teamwork, respect, conflicthandling, and decisionmaking. Sessions also include talks on safety, resisting gang pressure, healthy habits, and future planning. Activities take place in community fields and school spaces to keep youth engaged and off the streets.
Participants gain confidence, discipline, and skills that reduce their vulnerability to crime and risky behaviour. Regular soccer and life skills sessions build respect for self and others, offer alternatives to negative peer influence, and can open pathways to education or work opportunities. Over time, fewer youth are exposed to gang pressure and urban violence. The project strengthens community ties and gives young people tools to make positive choices.
