Social Enterprise Dev't for Student Organizations

By Norby R. Salonga, PhD | Founding Director, LSEED Center

The Lasallian Social Enterprise for Economic Development (LSEED) Center in partnership with the social action and student affairs units of both DLSU Manila and Laguna campuses has formally implemented its pilot batch of the Social Enterprise Development for Student Organizations (SEDSO). SEDSO Program is a social enterprise program for student organizations. It provides a combined mentorship and social enterprise development experience for Lasallian student leaders by allowing them to create social enterprise projects with select community partners.

Last May 17 and 24, 2023, a social enterprise boot camp was held at LSEED Center’s Office with around 34 participants representing 5 teams of social enterprises. The boot camp provided a learning space for participants to understand the role of community organizing in social enterprise development and its application to community development. It also helped them to familiarize themselves with key strategies in managing social enterprises' operation in the fields of marketing, value chain, finance, and resource mobilization. A series of close coaching and mentoring sessions were also provided in order to help shape their problem statement and social enterprise ideas.

The evaluation results revealed that the majority of the participants found the topics very useful in building their social enterprises and that the level and quality of participation and interaction through the workshops helped improve their teamwork. A participant pointed out a new found understanding of social entrepreneurship which was described as “Meaningful when the end is kept in mind and the people we work with are remembered”. Likewise, the participants appreciated the knowledge and expertise of the resource persons about the training topics. At the end of the activity, the SE Boot Camp was graded excellent with a 4.61/5 total score by the participants.
