"Puentes Educativos" (Education Bridges) is a socioeducational program that works with teenagers in prison. We address the limited educational offers and training opportunities that these teenagers have, due to their deprivation of liberty, which makes it even more difficult for them to overcome their challenges. Our main goal is to improve the educational levels and work opportunities of more that 70 students teenagers that are in prisons in INISA, throughout a very individualized approach.
Uruguay has an approximate of 270 teenagers in prisons. Unfortunately 70% of these teenagers has not completed what we call Basic Cycle (first three years of secondary education), and 25% has their primary education incomplete. Most of them have had many failures in their education pathway, which makes it very difficult for them to access educational or work opportunities, making the gap even bigger.
We want to improve the educational levels and work opportunities of more that 70 students teenagers in prisons. Throughout an agreement with INISA, we have been doing it for the past 3 years. Teenagers in prison are the most invisible amongst the invisiblee, so with this program we are trying really hard to change the narrative about them, to give them more and better opportunities and to create a better place not only for them but for the whole society.
We take them on field trips that allow students to link everything they learn with the world that surrounds them outside INISA, where they can get to know other realities and opportunities. The personilized approach of the program includes working with curricular subjects such as reading, writing and mathematics, as well as working in strengthening their socioemotional skills that are esential for their socioeducational reinsertion.
