Flood Response and Climate Resilience Support for Families of  Persons with Disabilities

Protibandhi Shishu Shiekkha O Paricharja Samity (PROSHIPS) is a nonprofit and non-government voluntary organization working with persons with disabilities in remote and vulnerable areas of Bangladesh. Many families living in the river-basin areas of Jamalpur are regularly affected by seasonal flooding, waterlogging, river erosion, displacement, and loss of livelihoods. Persons with disabilities, women, children, and ultra-poor households face additional challenges in accessing food, healthcare, safe shelter, lighting, sanitation, and menstrual hygiene facilities during emergencies.

Through support raised on the GlobalGiving Foundation platform, PROSHIPS has been working to strengthen the safety, dignity, health, and resilience of flood-affected and highly vulnerable families. The project proposes emergency support including solar-powered lights, dry food, essential medicines, and menstrual hygiene kits.

During this quarter On 13 August 2026, PROSHIPS organized a community consultation meeting and provided emergency dry-food assistance to 10 flood-affected and ultra-poor families of persons with disabilities in the project area. At the same dated on 13 August 2026, PROSHIPS organized a consultation meeting with beneficiaries and community representatives to discuss the challenges faced by persons with disabilities and vulnerable families during the flood season. The meeting was attended by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Islampur Upazila, Jamalpur, as the Chief Guest and representative of the Government of Bangladesh. The participation of the government representative created an important opportunity for beneficiaries to share their experiences and communicate their priority needs directly with local administration. The consultation also strengthened communication between vulnerable community members, PROSHIPS, and local government representatives and highlighted the importance of disability-inclusive disaster preparedness and response. Following the consultation, PROSHIPS provided dry-food packages to 10 flood-affected and ultra-poor families with persons with disabilities in the project areas.

The support was prioritized for families experiencing severe economic hardship and increased vulnerability due to flooding. The food assistance helped families meet immediate household food needs during a difficult period and reduced some of the pressure caused by loss of income and disruption of normal livelihoods. The distribution was carried out with attention to transparency, fairness, dignity, and the specific needs of vulnerable households. For families living in flood-prone and economically disadvantaged communities, even a small amount of emergency food assistance can make an important difference. The dry-food support provided immediate relief to families who were struggling to meet their basic food requirements.

PROSHIPS will continue to mobilize resources through GlobalGiving to expand emergency assistance to vulnerable families during the flood season. Depending on available resources and community needs, planned support includes: Solar-powered lights for flood-affected households and shelters; Dry-food and essential household support; Essential medicines and basic health assistance; Menstrual hygiene kits for women and adolescent girls with disabilities; Disability-inclusive disaster preparedness and awareness; Community consultation and coordination with local government; Strengthening community resilience and preparedness for future climate-related disasters.
