Community Meeting with Women & Girls on Disaster Risk Reduction

Our organization, working in the river basin areas of Jamalpur district, conducted a community meeting on the date 17 September 2025  at Belgacha Union near Jamuna river with women and girls focusing on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). The event was organized as part of our ongoing efforts to build local capacity and strengthen community resilience to frequent floods, river erosion, and other climate-induced disasters. The meeting brought together women and adolescent girls from vulnerable households to share their experiences, challenges, and coping mechanisms in times of disaster. Facilitators highlighted the importance of preparedness, early warning systems, and community-led action in reducing risks. Women participants discussed how they are often the first responders during floods—protecting children, safeguarding household items, and ensuring food security—yet their voices are rarely included in formal planning processes.

The session provided practical knowledge on safe shelter management, emergency health care, child protection, and water and sanitation during emergencies. Girls also raised concerns about the lack of menstrual hygiene facilities and safety measures in flood shelters. Through participatory dialogue, the group identified community priorities, including stronger early warning dissemination, livelihood recovery support, and the inclusion of women’s perspectives in local disaster committees.. This initiative aims to ensure that gender-sensitive disaster management becomes an integral part of resilience building in the river basin areas.

                                  Alternative activity for Flood-Damaged Recovery.

PROTIBANADHI SHISHU SHIEKKHA O PARICHARJA SAMITY (PROSHIPS) has been actively supporting persons with disabilities in the Jamalpur district, Bangladesh. During the reporting period On the Dated 06^th April 2025 conducted Orientation Program on House based poultry farming & inclusive disaster risk reduction orientation for alternative Flood damaged recovery activity with 30 Women & adolescent girls in the community. They are learn to how to home based goat & Poultry farming in their own initiatives. They are very much happy for organization providing support. In the short term, this activity has provided immediate relief, ensuring survival and basic needs. Families received livestock, which contributed to their nutrition and income.

The primary goal of the project was to ensure sustainable recovery for persons with disabilities and their families by addressing their immediate needs and rebuilding their livelihoods. Providing essential relief materials, including food, educational supplies, and sanitation facilities. Supporting disabled families with livestock (goats, Duck &Hens) for home-based poultry farming. Ensuring access to clean drinking water through tube wells installation. Assisting families in regaining self-sufficiency post-flood.

This initiative promotes financial independence through livestock rearing, allowing families to generate income. Access to clean water and sanitation will have lasting health benefits, reducing disease risks. The community as a whole benefits from economic recovery, improved hygiene, and educational continuity for children.
