We are pleased to report that our solar plant is being kept in tip-top condition to keep our elephants in the light!
At HERD, we believe it is important to take care of the environment. That is why we chose to invest in renewable energy. Our current plant consists of 200 solar panels, 150 kW of output, and 100 kWh of battery storage capacity, which must provide, amongst other things, electricity to the orphanage and homestead.
But to ensure that the plant is able to provide stable support, we need to have the system cleaned at least once a year. To remove the African dust, we had specialists inspect the system, who recommended cleaning the solar panels to improve power output efficiency.
According to research, having your solar panels washed once a year can increase your power output by up to 12%. This is especially useful as we enter our winter season, when our daily amount of sunshine is reduced.
Solar power not only reduces our environmental impact but is crucial for our South African elephant orphanage due to Eskom's frequent, unpredictable outages. It provides a stable, cost-effective, and sustainable solution to support essential functions and care for our elephants' well-being.
As we look back at the past few months, we are thankful for our solar energy plant and appreciate each of you who made this possible.
If you would like to donate again to help us keep the solar plant stable and in perfect condition, please visit https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/solar-campaign-keep-the-power-on-at-herd/
Warm regards,
The HERD team
