Summary

Thousands of people languish in rural Swaziland due to their inability to access health care. Distance and cost of transport keep many from going to a clinic. HIV, diabetes, hypertension, malaria and many other treatable diseases are all killers when healthcare is beyond reach. Women and children suffer disproportionately. Poverty adds to the weight of isolation. An economic development center focusing on developing local skills and resources brings poverty alleviation closer to reality here.

Challenge

Because of poverty and the distance to functional clinics, many in these remote areas can not access health care of any sort. Opening a clinic central to these remote communities will provide free quality and compassionate health care to the most isolated and impoverished. Sustainability of the clinic and services requires minimizing operating costs. Securing a solar installation will help the clinic operate efficiently while minimizing operating costs so funds can be dedicated to patient care.

Solution

Minimizing daily operating costs will allow the clinic to focus funds on services and outreach to the surrounding communities. Several thousand people who would have had limited access to health care will now be able to receive quality and compassionate care. Women, infants and children will benefit from the closer clinic and the improved breadth and quality of services available. Men will be able to access care and remain healthy to work their fields or what few jobs are available.

Long-Term Impact

Long term access to health services means that chronic diseases can be treated effectively. Long term access to consistent quality services means children can grow to their maximum potential with out the burden of untreated treatable diseases. But sustainability of the clinic and the health services can only be maintained if scarce funds can be put into services versus electricity.
