Solar Capacity is not just about Electricity

By Temnotfo Mvubu | Grant Writer/Research

At the clinic
At the clinic

Every day at Kudvumisa Foundation, families rely on us for essential healthcare and support. For many, the clinic is more than a building; it is a lifeline. But providing these services comes with challenges, and one of the biggest is something most of us take for granted: electricity. Rising costs are putting pressure on our budget, taking resources that could go directly to patient care and programs.

Our Solar for a Clinic and Skills Centre project is designed to address this challenge. While we already have solar panels in place, they are not yet generating enough power to meet the clinic’s needs. Expanding our solar capacity means we can reduce electricity costs, keep the clinic running during power outages, and invest more in programs that change lives.

The urgency of this project has grown sharply. Electricity costs rose significantly last year, and a potential 20% increase in tariffs looms on the horizon, a steep jump from the 8% increase the previous year. Without sufficient solar power, higher electricity bills could strain our operations, limit the services we provide, and make it harder to support the community when they need us most.

We are grateful for the progress so far. $6,706 has been raised toward our $25,000 goal, a sign that our community and partners believe in this vision. Yet there is still $18,294 to go, and with rising costs, the need has never been greater. Every step forward in this project is a step toward stability, resilience, and uninterrupted care for our patients.

Expanding our solar capacity is not just about electricity. It is about safeguarding the services that families rely on, ensuring the clinic remains a place of care and hope even in challenging times. Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far. Together, we are making real change, and with continued belief and encouragement from our community, we can fully realize this vision and keep the lights on for all who depend on us.
