Local Build, Real Results: Two Units Complete

By John Bottenberg | Acting Executive Director, ATC

The Completed Units
The Completed Units

Following our June milestone announcing the completion of our third-generation solar dehydrator design, we’re thrilled to share that field fabrication and installation are now complete in Guatemala.

In August 2025, John Barrie worked alongside local carpenters to build and install two full-scale solar fruit dehydrators at a cooperative farm in San Lucas Tolimán. Each unit was fabricated locally using regionally available materials—an important step toward long-term sustainability and community ownership of the technology.

The new dehydrators have already been used to dry bananas, mangos, apples, and other crops, achieving steady drying performance even during overcast conditions. Farmers report that product quality and shelf life have improved significantly, reducing spoilage and creating new opportunities for income generation.

Key Highlights

  • 2 solar dehydrators built and installed locally

  • Local carpenters trained on fabrication and maintenance methods

  • Cooperative farm testing under real production conditions

  • Dried fruit samples produced, packaged, and sold at local markets

  • User feedback incorporated into final engineering drawings

Our next steps include finalizing the open-source technical drawings and developing a simple “solar drying cookbook” to help micro-entrepreneurs turn harvested fruit into shelf-stable market products.

This progress marks a tangible leap from design to local impact—turning solar energy and community skill into sustainable livelihoods.

Next Milestones

  • Publish and share finalized drawings (December 2025 – January 2026)

  • Collect data on income generation and food-waste reduction

  • Plan training sessions for women entrepreneurs (2026)

Thank you for your continued support in helping small farmers turn sunlight into opportunity.
