Faster Drying, Greater Capacity: Field Improvements Confirmed
By John Bottenberg | Acting Executive Director, ATC
Since our last update, we’ve received encouraging feedback from the cooperative farmers using the newly installed third-generation solar dehydrators in Guatemala.
Performance Improvements in the Field
José and the team report that the updated design is performing significantly better than previous versions. The most important improvement has been replacing acrylic with glass in the solar collector panel. The glass retains heat more effectively, allowing higher and more consistent internal temperatures.
As a result, drying times have improved dramatically:
This improvement not only increases efficiency but also reduces the risk of spoilage during extended drying cycles.
Larger Units, More Production
The new dehydrators are also larger than earlier models, providing additional tray space. Farmers can now process greater volumes of herbs and fruit at one time, increasing both food preservation and income potential.
According to the cooperative, the dehydrators are being used consistently. With faster turnaround times and increased capacity, the units are becoming integrated into regular production rather than occasional use.
Real Impact for Micro-Entrepreneurs
Dried herbs and fruits are being prepared for local sale, creating new revenue streams while preserving nutritious food for family consumption. Faster drying cycles mean:
These practical improvements strengthen the original goal of this project: equipping rural cooperatives with sustainable technology that supports both nutrition and income.
Next Step: Open-Source Drawings
The remaining milestone for this phase is finalizing the updated technical drawings. John Barrie will complete and publish the revised open-source plans once he has recovered from recent surgery. Making these finalized drawings available ensures that other communities can replicate and adapt the improved design.
We appreciate your continued support in helping small farmers transform sunlight into practical opportunity.
