Lighting the Way: Progress Report from ATC's Solar Midwife Program

I hope this letter finds you well. I am delighted to update you on the progress of The Appropriate Technology Collaborative's (ATC) Solar Midwife program in Guatemala, a journey made possible by your support.

Equipping Midwives and Families: A Lifeline of Hope

In collaboration with our dedicated Mayan midwife collaborative partners, we are growing our multifaceted approach to address the challenges of poverty faced by rural communities. By providing our newest, robust 10-watt solar power kits and long-lasting water filters to families expecting new members, we are not just delivering utilities; we are offering a lifeline of hope. Solar power brings both illumination and the opportunity for children to study at night, expanding their horizons. Every extra year of school closely correlates to higher lifetime income.

Leverage: Intervention At The Right Time

The World Health Organization recognizes the first 1,000 days of a child’s life as the most important time for good nutrition so children can grow up to their full potential. This starts when a mother becomes pregnant. We recently adapted our program to bring the benefits of clean water and solar light earlier in a pregnancy so we have the greatest impact.

Immediate Medical Support: Enhancing Maternal Health

Recognizing the immediate needs of the midwives, in July we supplied ultrasound fetal heart monitors and a high-tech "sphygmomanometer" (blood pressure cuff). This vital equipment helps the midwives provide high quality maternal health and better care during childbirth, directly impacting the well-being of both mothers and newborns.

Empowering Midwives: Education and Sustainable Impact

To ensure the sustainability of our efforts, we have initiated an educational program for midwives. This curriculum covers essential topics such as electricity, circuits, and solar power installation. By empowering midwives with knowledge and hands-on training we are fostering self-reliance within communities, enabling them to continue our mission independently.

Breaking Chains of Poverty: Economic Sustainability

Our solar power initiative not only illuminates homes but also liberates families from the cycle of poverty. With reduced expenditure on candles, families are saving crucial funds, enabling them to invest in their children's education and nutrition. This newfound economic stability is pivotal in breaking the chains that have bound these families for generations. Note: With our partners we create the conditions where families save money, have higher incomes and are healthier. Families decide for themselves where to spend their extra income. This promotes agency, not dependencey. From our 15 years experience delivering sustainable technologies to rural families we find they choose to purchase better food. They choose to pay for school supplies, almost all the time.

A Grateful Acknowledgment: Your Impact

Your belief in our mission has catalyzed this transformative change. It is because of your compassion and generosity that families are stepping into a brighter future, one where education, health, and economic stability are not distant dreams but tangible realities.

Conclusion: Looking Ahead

As we move forward, our commitment to bring light to lives, and nurturing futures remains unwavering. We are eager to share more success stories and milestones with you, showcasing the tangible impact of your support. Thank you for being a beacon of hope, guiding us in our mission to create lasting change in the lives of the Mayan communities we serve.

With sincere gratitude,
