Challenge

Most smallholder farmers are engaged in growing crops such as tomatoes, Cabbage, Watermelon, Onions, carrots, and potatoes. These crops and fruits need enough water to grow. For most farmers who have no access to credit, accessing a solar water pump is a farfetched dream. The only water pump they "think" is affordable in the short term is a petrol or diesel water pump which the upfront cost is somewhere around $205-$500

Solution

Through this project, we aim to directly empower and transition a total of 400 smallholder farmers in 18 months with solar-powered water pumps to ease their irrigation work, save them money and be able to irrigate their fields year-round, thus mitigating the adverse impact of seasonal income and erratic and unreliable rainfall. The investment will also help smallholder farmers get training in crop production so that they can increase their yields.

Long-Term Impact

The impact of these solutions will include: 1. The increase of land cultivation by smallholder farmers will in turn increase crop production leading to achieving food security at household and community levels. 2. Fuel savings by smallholder farmers will be used to finance other needful areas such as children's education, health, and better nutrition.
