Summary

HDF will install solar powered water pumps in two villages of Tharparkar. There is a severe water shortage in district Tharparkar, Sindh. On average, it takes 3 to 4 hours to collect water for each family daily. The time and energy which is required to pull a water bucket from 300 feet below ground level is a real challenge. Unfortunately, pregnant women also have to do this exercise, affecting both, the mother and the unborn child. Both, community and cattle will benefit from the project.

Challenge

Since last three years Tharparkar is facing a drought like situation. It has the lowest Human Development Index of all the districts in Sindh Province and is one of the most water insecure and least developed regions of Pakistan. It takes about 3-4 hours to collect water for each family daily. The time and energy which is required to pull a water bucket from 300 feet below ground level is a real challenge. Unfortunately, pregnant women and children also have to do this strenuous exertion.

Solution

HDF has implemented over 2000 community infrastructure projects, 138 solar powered projects, construction of 2 delay action dams and 2 check dams, installation of 59 water filtration plants, over 1000 hand pumps in communities across Pakistan. We aim to select two water-scarce villages of Tharparkar and install solar powered pumps which is an innovative approach designed to facilitate the community in easy extraction of water.

Long-Term Impact

Solar energy, present in abundance, will offer an inexpensive solution to the problem and is a practical and affordable solution designed to mitigate the water shortage problem faced by community. Besides infrastructure, capacity building sessions of the entire village will be conducted on water conservation, sanitation, hygiene and kitchen gardening for efficient utilization of water and project sustainability .
