3 SOLELab: The future's Library around Colombia

At SOLE Colombia we believe that the Internet is a public service. Everyone should be able to connect to the Internet, no matter where they are or the conditions in which they live. Because the Internet is a way to connect with the world, a way to feel part of, a way to understand that we are not alone, that there is always someone on the other side. It is a way to tell us "What happens to you, matters to me. You are important to me." Is there anything more human than the connection between us? 

At SOLE Colombia we are committed to one purpose: to learn, dialogue and take action together, throughout the Internet. We use the Internet to solve real-life problems and challenges - things that matter to us and to the communities where we work - through Big Questions. What is a Big Question? An interesting, engaging question that is not easily answered - or maybe not even answered at all - by the group that is going to research it on the Internet... Do you have one? They are infinite!

From "where does water enter the coconut?" to "why are tears salty?", "how does the moon affect humans?" to "how can I improve the productivity of bees and livestock in my community simultaneously?" There are infinite questions we can ask the Internet. If we investigate them as a group, moreover, we can analyze more information, discuss it among ourselves fostering our communication and dialogue skills, we will develop critical thinking by assessing the information that groups find, we will find joint conclusions and we will be able to elaborate a strategy to solve what is troubling us, and, most importantly, we will discover new questions with which we will deepen and create more useful knowledge for our environment and community, 

Thus, we are creating an equitable and beautiful future together, one Big Question at a time, spanking the curiosity of groups of people, transforming Internet-enabled spaces into SOLEs (Self-Organized Learning Environments) and shaking up the status quo by creating networks of communities that learn across borders and differences, bridging people and ideas into a more vibrant shared world.

And how to get more community spaces connected to the Internet? That is almost always the most difficult challenge. The communities we work with are geographically distant, historically disconnected. Governments and private entities do not cover connectivity and the conditions of the communities often make it impossible to connect... Impossible? What if there was a connectivity guide? A place where you could make a self-diagnosis, based on the conditions you have at that moment, and get solutions to implement... What would that guide look like? How would it work? What solutions would it contain?

Since we can't know everything, but we have talented friends in many places, we do what we do best: SOLE.

We convened our superfriends and our own team for several SOLE sessions with Big Questions such as "What does a solutions guide contain?", "What solutions would be useful for our communities to connect to the Internet to learn in groups (Spanish session and English session)?", "What form and appearance could the self-diagnosis tool and connectivity solutions guide have?", "Do the solutions we have proposed work? how could we test them?", "How could we deploy the self-assessment tool in the simplest and most efficient way?",.... The key is to understand what this tool could look like, what content it would have to have, how it could be downloaded, how it would reach those places where it is most needed, what languages it could contain, how these solutions would have to be written so that everyone could understand them, who could help us build it ..... We invited creative minds from all over the world, whom we have met at events, conventions, through other friendly organizations, in many places in life, people recommended by other people and groups..... A real melting pot of wonderful people wanting to change the world together with us! And so we started to create this guide.... Do you want to take a look at what we have built throughout the year? Una guía de soluciones para la conectividad? ¿Qué es eso?

En SOLE Colombia creemos que Internet es un servicio público. Todo el mundo debería poder conectarse a Internet, sin importar el lugar donde se encuentre o las condiciones en las que viva. Porque Internet es una manera de conectar con el mundo, una manera de sentirnos parte de, una manera de entender que no estamos solos, que siempre hay alguien al otro lado. Es una vía para decirnos “Lo que te pasa, me importa. Tú eres importante para mi.” ¿Hay algo más humano que la conexión entre nosotros? 

En SOLE Colombia apostamos por un propósito: aprender, dialogar y tomar acción juntos, usando Internet. Usamos Internet para solucionar problemas y retos de la vida real -cosas que nos interesan y les interesan a las comunidades donde trabajamos- a través de Grandes Preguntas. ¿Qué es una Gran Pregunta? Una pregunta interesante, enganchadora, que no tiene fácil respuesta -o quizá ni siquiera tenga respuesta- para el grupo que la va a investigar en Internet… ¿Tienes alguna? ¡Hay infinitas!

Desde “¿por dónde le entra el agua al coco?”, “¿por qué las lágrimas son saladas?”, pasando “¿cómo afecta la luna a los seres humanos”, hasta “¿cómo puedo mejorar la productividad de las abejas y el ganado de mi comunidad, simultáneamente?” Hay infinitas preguntas que podemos hacerle a Internet. Si las investigamos en grupo, además, podemos analizar más información, discutirla entre nosotros fomentando nuestras habilidades de comunicación y diálogo, desarrollaremos pensamiento crítico al valorar la información que los grupos encuentran, encontraremos conclusiones conjuntas y podremos elaborar una estrategia para solucionar lo que nos inquieta, y, lo más importante, descubriremos nuevas preguntas con las que profundizaremos y crearemos más conocimiento útil para nuestro entorno, 

Así, estamos creando un futuro equitativo y hermoso juntos, una Gran Pregunta a la vez, encendiendo la curiosidad de grupos de personas, transformando espacios habilitados para Internet para convertirlos en SOLEs (Ambientes de Aprendizaje Auto-Organizado, por sus siglas en inglés) y sacudiendo el statu quo mediante la creación de redes de comunidades que aprenden más allá de las fronteras y las diferencias, tendiendo puentes entre las personas y las ideas hacia un mundo compartido más vibrante.

¿Y cómo conseguir que más espacios comunitarios estén conectados a Internet? Casi siempre ese es el reto más difícil. Las Comunidades con las que trabajamos están lejos geográficamente, históricamente desconectadas. Gobiernos y entidades privadas no abarcan la conectividad y las condiciones de las comunidades, muchas veces, hacen imposible la conexión… ¿imposible? ¿Y si existiera una guía de conectividad? Un lugar donde pudieras hacer un autodiagnóstico, basado en las condiciones que tengas en ese momento, y consiguieras soluciones para implementar.. ¿Cómo sería esa guía? ¿Cómo funcionaría? ¿Qué soluciones contendría?

Como no podemos saberlo todo, pero tenemos amigos talentosos en muchas partes, nos dedicamos a lo que mejor sabemos hacer: SOLE. 

Convocamos a nuestros superamigos y a nuestro propio equipo a varias sesiones de SOLE con Grandes Preguntas como “¿Qué contiene una guía de soluciones?”, “¿Qué soluciones les servirían a nuestras comunidades para conectarse a Internet para aprender en grupos (sesión en español y sesión en ingles)?”, “¿Qué forma y aspecto que podría tener la herramienta de autodiagnóstico y guía de soluciones de conectividad?”, “¿Funcionan las soluciones que hemos planteado? ¿cómo podríamos probarlas?”, “¿Cómo podríamos desplegar la herramienta de autoevaluación de la manera más simple y eficiente?”,.. La clave es entender cómo podría ser esta herramienta, qué contenido tendría que tener, cómo podría descargarse, cómo llegaría a aquellos lugares donde más se necesita, qué idiomas podría contener, cómo tendrían que estar redactadas esas soluciones para que todo el mundo pudiera entenderlas, quién podría ayudarnos a construirla….Invitamos a mentes creativas de todo el mundo, a las que hemos conocido en eventos, convenciones, a través de otras organizaciones amigas, en muchos lugares de la vida, personas recomendadas por otras personas y grupos…. ¡Un auténtico crisol de gente maravillosa con ganas de cambiar el mundo junto a nosotros!
