What happens when the "loading" sign on Netflix takes more than 4 or 5 seconds to disappear? And what about when we want to look up a word on google, or an address, and the tab takes a long time to load? Now, the worst thing, without a doubt, are those three little dots of coverage at the top of the phone screen, announcing that we have no network coverage.

I'm sure you share with me the feelings of helplessness and irrational despair that immediately overwhelm me. I have to make a conscious effort to understand that what is happening is that IT (not me) just can't connect, that's all.

The communities where SOLE Colombia works are remote. Many of them have very poor connectivity. Sometimes, it is because mobile phone operators do not have a repeater antenna nearby and the service is bad. Other times it is not about coverage, but rather the download capacity that they assign to the service. Sometimes it is a problem of supply of local operators, who do not reach the points where human settlements are. Sometimes geographical conditions combine absolute beauty with impenetrability and isolation. Other times it is the weather conditions, a storm cloud can destroy the satellite signal. Some signal receiving terminals may be configured with limitations or need modifications to function better.

Knowing how the Internet works is simple, even if we don't believe it. Knowing that the Internet is a group of connected computers, that can send data to each other, and that use a common language, is the first step: the computers are connected through an extensive network of underground and underwater cables, it also uses radio waves. and other techniques. Data flows in the form of packets with instructions, which makes it easier for information to go faster, more efficiently, and allows many devices to use the network and send information at the same time. So, we talk about routers, which are like traffic cops, they make sure that Internet traffic goes to correct networks, switches connect devices that share the same network and send the information to the correct destination, web servers, In large data centers distributed around the world, they are responsible for storing content, queries and protocols, and other important tasks to keep the Internet running.

And you will ask yourself, why am I telling you all this? Well, because the reason for wanting to build SOLELab: The Library of the Future and SOLE Voltage: A Guide to Connecting It is to collaborate in creating a better Internet. It is understanding that connecting to the Internet as a group improves the experience of interaction on the network from minute one, because exploring a place together with people who share your same interests transforms it into an enriched experience with the eyes and hands of other people, it is built a safe, fun, accompanied, supportive experience, and also gives the opportunity to not be alone on the path to solving what can go wrong. And one of the things that can go wrong, or be another learning opportunity, depending on how you look at it, is precisely the Internet connection.

So what is SOLE Voltaje? It is a tool where SOLE Colombia is collecting, curating, testing and disseminating alternatives to improve the Internet connection in a technical and human way, collects solutions to connectivity problems, as well as the challenges in the great task of using the Internet as a group to learn, dialogue and take action together.

How does it work? Our first version is this website where you can, depending on the characteristics of the place where you want to connect, the money you have, the people who accompany you and your interest in china, find solutions to connect, improve your signal, or put agreement with your community to create new opportunities and live in a more equitable and beautiful world together.

Y, mientras tanto… ¡SOLEVoltaje! Qué hacer cuando parece no haber Internet

¿Os ha pasado que, en medio de una llamada por whatsapp, la señal se vuelve inestable y se corta la comunicación? ¿Qué nos pasa cuando el letrero de “cargando” en netflix tarda más de 4 o 5 segundos en desaparecer? Y, ¿qué tal cuando queremos buscar una palabra en google, o una dirección, y la pestaña tarda en cargar? Ahora, lo peor, sin duda, son esos tres puntitos de cobertura en la parte superior de la pantalla del teléfono, que nos anuncian que no tenemos cobertura de red.

Seguro que compartís conmigo las sensaciones de impotencia y de irracional desesperación que me sobrecogen de inmediato. Tengo que hacer un trabajo consciente por entender que lo que está pasando es que no puedo conectarme, sólo eso. 

Las comunidades donde SOLE Colombia trabaja son remotas. Muchas de ellas tienen una conectividad muy precaria. A veces, es que los operadores de telefonía móvil no tienen antena repetidora cerca y el servicio es malo. Otras veces no se trata de la cobertura, sino de la capacidad de descarga que adjudican al servicio. A veces es un problema de oferta de operadores locales, que no terminan de llegar a los puntos donde están los asentamientos humanos. A veces las condiciones geográficas combinan absoluta belleza con impenetrabilidad y aislamiento. Otras veces son las condiciones meteorológicas, un nubarrón puede acabar con la señal satelital. Algunas, los terminales receptores de la señal pueden estar configurados con limitaciones o necesitar modificaciones para funcionar mejor.

Conocer el funcionamiento de Internet es sencillo, aunque no lo creamos. Saber que Internet es un grupo de ordenadores conectados, que pueden enviarse datos entre sí, y que utilizan un lenguaje común, es el primer paso: los equipos se conectan a través de una extensa red de cables subterráneos y submarinos, también usa ondas de radio y otras técnicas. Los datos fluyen en forma de paquetes con instrucciones, lo que facilita que la información vaya más rápido, de forma más eficiente y permite tener muchos dispositivos utilizando la red y enviando información al mismo tiempo. Entonces, hablamos de los enrutadores, que son como los policías de tráfico, se aseguran de que el tráfico de Internet vaya a redes correctas, los conmutadores conectan los dispositivos que comparten la misma red y envían la información al destino correcto, los servidoresweb, en grandes centros de datos distribuidos por todo el mundo, se encargan de almacenar el contenido, consultas y protocolos y otras tareas importantes para que el Internet siga funcionando.

Es entender que conectarnos a Internet en grupo mejora la experiencia de interacción en la red desde el minuto uno, porque explorar un lugar junto con personas que comparten tus mismos intereses lo transforma en una experiencia enriquecida con los ojos y manos de otras personas, se construye una experiencia segura, divertida, acompañada, solidaria, y, también da la oportunidad de no estar solo en el camino de resolver lo que puede salir mal. Y una de las cosas que puede salir mal, o ser una oportunidad más de aprendizaje, según se mire, es precisamente la conexión a Internet.

Entonces ¿qué es SOLE Voltaje? Es una herramienta donde SOLE Colombia está recogiendo, curando, probando y divulgando, alternativas para mejorar la conexión a Internet tecnológica y humanamente, recoge soluciones de problemas de conectividad, así como a los retos en la gran tarea de usar el internet en grupo para aprender, dialogar y tomar acción. 

¿Cómo funciona? nuestra primera versión es esta web donde puedes, según las características del lugar donde te quieres conectar, el dinero con el que cuentas, las personas que te acompañan y tu interés por la cacharrería, encontrar soluciones para conectarte, mejorar tu señal, o poner de acuerdo a tu comunidad para crear oportunidades nuevas y vivir en un mundo más equitativo y hermoso juntos.
