Moving Robots Across the Caribbean Sea!

By Danielle Webster | SOSA Board Member

When asked: What did you like most about this workshop?

“The level of interaction and the fact that we were able to control an actual robot remote from Jamaica!”

SOSA’s latest workshop involved participants (ages 9-11) from Jamaica and the United States. Virtually, we provided students with a positive and engaging experience aimed to improve their interest in pursuing careers in science and technology. Under the theme Robotics Helping Hand to Humanity, students learned about the evolution of robotics and how it has influenced fields such as healthcare, agriculture, and aeronautics. Robots were hand-crafted (check out our photo) to be programmed and controlled from anywhere in the world. This meant that our 4th and 5th grade students were able to pilot the robots remotely from the comfort of their own schools! Not only did this workshop teach the functionality of robotics, it also exposed how different cultures can come together to improve robotic technology.

With an introduction to the history of robotics in space, we introduced the first robot to ever make it into space, the first Landers in space, and the first robots used to explore the Solar System. A website was created for the students to input their code into the website, which allowed the robots to move in real time from the workshop base in Florida for an activity that probed the students to “protect earth from an oncoming asteroid”. The best part as stated by one student was “I got the opportunity to see coding happen live and problem solving the meteor crash!”

We can’t wait to bring more exciting and interactive experiences to our students. Thank you always for your support, and we will continue to keep you updated on our SOSA adventures!
