A final update on South Asia flood recovery

Since last summer's severe monsoon flooding across southern Nepal, eastern India, and Bangladesh claimed 1,288 lives and impacted an estimated 45 million people, we've witnessed steady progress toward recovery thanks to our nonprofit partners and the generous support from donors like you.

More than 600 GlobalGivers like you raised nearly $120,000 to support nine vetted nonprofit partners who delivered emergency relief in the weeks and months immediately following the flooding and have led the long-term recovery efforts in their communities in the months since.

In today's final fund update, I'd like to share updates from three of our partners, two in Nepal and one in India, which are continuing to assist families as they recover and are working with communities to prepare for future flooding.

  • Janaki Women Awareness Society is about to begin construction on five flood-resilient community shelters in Janakpur, Nepal, which will include drinking water supplies and toilets resistant to flood damage.
  • Apne Aap Women Worldwide Trust has worked with families in Forbesganj, in Bihar, India, to rebuild flood-damaged homes since last summer, and to date, they've completed repairs on 35 of the 200 homes they've targeted.
  • Nepal Village Foundation has been working with families in and around Bhagawatpur in southern Nepal to rebuild homes and livelihoods destroyed by the floods. They recently reported progress on repairing the plaster walls of flood-damaged homes and the installation of new toilets. The families they supplied potato seeds to have been seeing great results, growing eight tons of potatoes—more than a year's supply with more left over to sell at market.

Thank you again for your inspiring generosity in supporting community-led recovery efforts in South Asia, and for making the smart choice to donate cash to vetted nonprofits after the floods. While we are closing this fund at this time, I hope you’ll continue to follow the ongoing work of our partners by subscribing to their project updates.

Warmly,
Britt Lake + the GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
