SAWS plans to sterilize 150, and provide basic veterinary care to at least a further 240 cats and dogs from low income households in rural Eswatini. Due to high incidence of poverty, these households are not able to cater to the needs of their animals, which results in high mortality rate caused by diseases, uncontrolled breeding and emaciation. This project will improve the quality of life of cats and dogs in selected communities in need by providing them with the much needed veterinary care.
In Eswatini, people value cats and dogs for rodent control and security. However, due to high incidence of poverty coupled with poor access to veterinary care and lack of awareness on responsible pet ownership, many pet owners do not sterilize and provide adequate veterinary care for their cats and dogs. This leads to uncontrolled breeding and high mortality rate, resulting in the unnecessary suffering of countless animals.
We will hold three Spay Clinics in three rural communities in 2020. Through these clinics, we will sterilize a total of at least 150, and provide the much needed veterinary treatments to at least a further 240 owned cats and dogs in need. Sterilization is the most humane solution to preventing the uncontrolled breeding of cats and dogs, and to save them from unnecessary suffering. The project will also improve their health by providing full veterinary checks and treatments.
This project will contribute to achieving a well-managed and healthy population of cats and dogs, and a reduction in feral population in a humane manner. The project will also contribute towards improving the welfare of cats and dogs, and achieving a humane society where they are well cared for, can thrive, and enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship with humans.
