The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes andthecommunity.
People with intellectual disabilities often face inactivity, stigma, isolation, and injustice. Many are left on the sidelines, not because of a lack of ability, but because of a lack of opportunity. Special Olympics Malaysia changes this by creating inclusive programmes, such as sports, leadership, and health programmes were athletes with intellectual disabilities are given the chance to train, learn, and strive just like any other athlete.
We support the intellectual disabilities community through consistent leadership training for athletes with intellectual disabilities, run regular weekly sports training, and outreach to rural schools and communities. By maintaining ongoing programmes, we create opportunities where athletes can continuously participate, lead, and be part of this community. We also provide support to coaches, allowing them to stay involved long term and ensure continuity in training.
In the long term, this allows us to build stable programmes with trained and committed coaches. Regular weekly training and continuous coach engagement help athletes develop in terms of leadership, sports and health. At the same time, we can expand outreach with athletes who are trained with leadership skills to rural areas, and create a sustainable community that supports people with intellectual disabilities year after year.
