Emancipation of the Girl Child Through Education

Thank you everyone for supporting our girl children over the last 16 years.

Sphoorti children are doing well. Most of the children on campus have gone home for summer break. Our children scored well in Intermediate (Grade 12) and STD X examinations. 

This year, we are as ambitious as ever and have some projects lined up for our girls in the long term and short term.  

In this update, we would like to tell you about a success story 

This case study is about Swetha who has become one of the most affable children at Sphoorti while she was once in a deeply traumatic condition. Childhood can be very harsh if a child is born in abject poverty and parents always quarrel and as a result, the mother commits suicide and father just leaves for good. Swetha is such example of a child with hardships right in the beginning of life.

Her story is of finding happiness in oneself, hope for the future and always carry a cheerful countenance. A lot of privileged children can learn lessons in life from her.

Swetha hails from a neighborhood called Nandanavanam in Ranga Reddy district. Her father Raju committed suicide because of marital discord and passed away in 2005. Her mother Santosha has been working as a maid in a few houses.
Swetha came to Sphoorti in 2018. She is in STD V now and is a very active girl. She plays kho-kho, skipping and badminton.

When Swetha joined Sphoorti, her health was in disarray. She was suffering from vitamin deficiency, skin infections and untidy teeth. As she was from a slum neighborhood, her behavior and habits were not so good.
We took the help of staff members and a local counselor to deal with her habits and behavior. After she joined school, she began to show interest in studies as well as arts and sports.
Swetha wants to stay at Sphoorti until she finishes her studies. She says that she feels very safe and happy to be with her friends and staff members. One day she wants to become an engineer and support Sphoorti children.

Swetha’s story is one of courage and confidence.
The staff members have to be particularly commended for their commitment and hard work in dealing with children like Swetha. Though she is just in STD V, she is mentally mature beyond her age.
Over the last seven years, the collaboration of our donors, well-wishers and other stake-holders has helped us provide a safe and secure childhood with facilities on par with those of a middle class family. Through your support, we can help more children like Swetha to become responsible citizens of India.
