Nepal Earthquake Recovery: Clean Drinking Water

Summary

When the Nepal Earthquake hit, 150 schools already had safe water. They served 100,000 of Kathmandu's poorest students. Now you can help restore clean water to these schools. You will not only do this for the students, but you can help schools become water-distribution points for earthquake survivors (kids, their families, and their neighbors). You really can make a big difference!

Challenge

Splash has been working for eight years to ensure clean drinking water at all public schools in the Kathmandu Valley. The recent earthquake in Nepal, which has affected millions of people and killed thousands of others, has made the need for clean, safe, accessible water more urgent than ever. Prior to the earthquake, Splash had installed high volume water filtration systems at 150 schools in the Kathmandu Valley. Splash now needs to replace or restore damaged systems as soon as possible.

Solution

Splash Nepal staff are assessing the current state of existing filtration systems; making necessary plumbing and infrastructure repairs; utilizing the current systems to provide clean water to the surrounding communities (many of who are now staying in emergency shelters in the schools we partner with); and helping Kathmandu schools rebuild their water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure so that kids can get back to school as soon as possible.

Long-Term Impact

Many schools previously serving 1,000 kids can now serve 5,000 or more people - adults and kids alike - in the neighborhood. This project will help the people of Kathmandu, especially the children, recover from the devastating earthquake through the provision of clean, safe drinking water. The project will prevent further illness or harm caused by drinking unsafe water (or no water at all).
