The second semester of classes so far has been full of fun and exciting programming for our students in environmental education, performing arts and English!
In environmental education, we continued with our monthly beach clean ups and every grade participated! At school, our students continued to care for the school garden, though the months of October through December are very dry and challenging. Finally, in January, seventh graders took a field trip to the Rio Muchacho Organic Farm, where they planted trees and learned about vegetarian and organic food, farm animals, and compost.
In performing arts, we had our annual Cultural Night Talent Show! The night started with a parade through town with our students and teachers in Colonial dress. Then, each class performed dance, song, or poetry. To finish the night, we had our big performance of Cinderella in English! Students and teachers worked so hard to make the event a success and it was truly spectacular!
In English, we received another group of volunteers through the Local Dreamers Foundation in Quito. Our students had the opportunity to practice English in and outside the classroom and get to know young people from around the world. We love receiving volunteers and learning from them all they have to offer.
This programming is part of what makes Los Algarrobos special in Canoa. With the public school over-crowded and underfunded, our students are not ony able to get the attention they need from their teachers in a small classroom setting, but also explore areas of study not available in the public school. Your support of our sponsored students allows children to have these beautiful experiences who otherwise would not have been able to.
Our next big project will be rebuilding the grounskeeper's house and adding a second floor to house future volunteers. This is a huge project that will need your help! Rebuilding the house is essential for the school to continue to function, and welcoming more volunteers in the future will expand and improve our programming immensely.
