Young refugees thrive on cricket and education

By Helen Vost | Managing Director

Cricket and education is proving to be a powerful combination for young Syrian refugees living in camps in Lebanon. The first seventeen teenage refugees educated and introduced to playing cricket by the Alsama Project just six years ago are now celebrating their greatest achievement by securing full scholarships to university.

Their life-changing journey began in 2020 when they came together, sitting in a circle on the floor of Alsama's first classroom in Shatila Refugee Camp in Beirut.  They had arrived in Lebanon from war torn Syria and many had received little or no education and couldn't write their own names.  That's when a programme of education and cricket began which has transformed their lives and opened up opportunities to study either overseas or at home.

'Six years later, I am one of the first graduates from Alsama. I became a cricket coach for more than 180 students and helped develop the cricket department by replacing the traditional paper scoring system with an app that tracks players' data instantly.'

'After six years, Alsama means opportunity.  It is the place where I discovered my strengths and learned that no matter where you come from, education has the power to change your future.'

Alsama continues to provide education for over 1000 students and has built a vibrant youth cricket community in Lebanon

Youth Sport Trust International supports the Alsama Project by providing online leadership coaching for the young cricket players.

Please help us to continue that work.  THANK YOU
