The project will use sports for peace to train unemployed youths to gain skills using as sports is a pull factor, to combat terrorist radicalization. Terrorist extremists and politicians take advantage of unemployed youths in Kenya for their selfish gains. Youths in Kenya are being used as cannon meant for the two groups to drive their agenda. Terrorist use money as bait to radicalize youth and politicians use them to fight their opponents and create ethnics violence and tension.
Kenya, one of the most developed and economically robust nations in Africa, descended into ethnic violence after a disputed presidential election in 2007 and has struggled to regain stability ever since. The youth, who are full of energy but are unemployed, who have lost vision and hope of any better future are, not surprisingly, the cannon meet for politicians to instigate ethnic conflict. Terrorist are radicalizing unemployed youths for their terrorism missions in Kenya and else where.
Sports is a pull factor for youths who are very energetic. As such, the youth that are idle, abusing substance and involving themselves in societal vices will be recruited to participate in sports. Those participating in the football league will be trained on life skills and non violence approach to peace. They will also be trained on other skills that will be helpful for connector projects among them to better their life and to keep peace as they will be trained as trainers to train other youth
During the sports, all the teams will form clubs that will be trained on non violence approach. Those trained will form Peace committees and join the peace network. This shifts the physical support and knowledge from the hands of Peace Warriors Organisation to local accessible youth leaders. This enables each community to build capacity for addressing issues of violence and report any activities that can affect peace and cohesion adversely. These groups will be supported by PWO to remain active.
