Summary

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a harmful, humiliating practice to control women, which leads to lifelong damage. We will play anti-FGM songs on the radio and show music videos, the trailer of a film about a safe house that shelters girls in danger, and a video of Malian legislators speaking out against FGM on Malian TV. We will erect 2 billboards in Bamako. Our goal is to convince Malians to abandon this age-old practice, which has such devastating effects. Read more at StopExcision.net.

Challenge

Eighty-five percent of girls and women in Mali have been genitally mutilated. The experience is very traumatic and many women have long-term problems stemming from their cutting: chronic infections, painful sex, very difficult childbirth, etc. Some girls even die from being cut and some women later die in childbirth.

Solution

Healthy Tomorrow sways public opinion by using media to show the harm of FGM and that attitudes towards FGM are shifting against the practice. Five million Malians will hear and watch their influential musicians and politicians speak out against the practice. By changing the conversation around FGM, we will be able to prevent more girls from being cut in the future.

Long-Term Impact

Women and girls in Mali will be spared the trauma of FGM and be more healthy and empowered.
